Nikolaus Richard Maria Hiob von Hontheim (born December 27, 1813 in Koblenz ; † January 11, 1883 ibid) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

He was the son of a higher regional judge and his wife, a born Gattermann.

Military career

Hontheim graduated from high school in Koblenz and then joined the 7th Uhlan Regiment of the Prussian Army on April 1, 1832 . Here he became second lieutenant in mid-April 1834 . In 1837/38 Hontheim was assigned to the teaching squadron and in March 1847 as squadron leader of the cavalry tribe of the Landwehr battalion of the 40th Infantry Regiment in Graefath . In mid-July 1848 he was promoted to prime lieutenant and a year later took part in the suppression of the revolutionary unrest in Baden and the Palatinate . Hontheim was used at Kirchheimbolanden , Dürkheim , Durlach and Kuppenheim and was awarded the Red Eagle Order IV class for his behavior . In 1851 he was assigned as a squadron leader to the 7th Landwehr-Uhlan Regiment in Saarbrücken, and in this capacity Hontheim became Rittmeister on June 22, 1852 . With his appointment as squadron chief , he returned to the 7th Uhlan Regiment on August 10, 1854. Under awarding of the character as Major Hontheim was born on June 11, 1858 squadron leader in the Guards Cuirassiers . On March 12, 1859, he received the patent for his rank and rose to the official staff officer . This was followed by a position as commander of the Magdeburg Cuirassier Regiment No. 7 from April 7, 1863 . In this position he rose to the rank of colonel until June 8, 1866 and led his regiment in the same year during the war against Austria to the battle of Königgrätz with special distinction. For this he was awarded the command of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords on September 20, 1866 .

On June 18, 1869, Hontheim was appointed commander of the 9th Cavalry Brigade in Glogau, with a position à la suite of his regiment . At the beginning of the war against France he was appointed commander of the mobile 8th cavalry brigade and a few days later promoted to major general. Hontheim led his large association in the battles at Weißenburg , Wörth , Beaumont , Sedan and Artenay . After the preliminary peace in Versailles he was appointed commander of the newly established 31st Cavalry Brigade in Strasbourg and was honored for his achievements during the war with the Iron Cross 1st Class and the Grand Commander of the Bavarian Order of Military Merit . With the award of the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords on the ring, Hontheim was put up for disposal on September 17, 1872 with the statutory pension . He died unmarried in his hometown.
