Hiram M. Dow

Hiram Millet Dow (born April 21, 1885 in Texas , † March 1969 in Roswell , New Mexico ) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1938 he served as lieutenant governor in the state of New Mexico .

Career

Hiram Millet Dow was born in 1885 to Mary "Molly" Ann Neatherlin (1861-1949) and James Lesile "Les" Dow (1860-1897) in Texas. He graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute at Roswell in 1904 . At that time he also built a simplified Anne-style house with two gables on the front roof and peeled columns at 702 North Richards. Completion was before 1905. He then studied law at Washington and Lee University in Lexington ( Virginia ), where he graduated in 1908. He married Eleanor "Ella" Laurena Lea (1881–1962), daughter of Sally Wildy (1849–1884) and Captain Joseph Callaway Lea (1841–1904), co-founder of the New Mexico Military Institute. From her first marriage with Edgar "Ted" Lucius Bedell, she brought two daughters into the new marriage, Eleanor Lea Bedell (1904–1975) and Josephine Lea Bedell (1910–1997). The couple had a daughter, Dorothy "Dottie" Lea Dow (1914–1998). Between 1935 and 1936 he was President of the State Bar of New Mexico . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . He was Mayor of Roswell. In 1936 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico - a post he held from 1937 to 1938. He then practiced as a respected lawyer in the petroleum industry. He served for many years as a civilian aide for the United States Secretary of the Army . He has received numerous awards and recognitions over the years. He died in Roswall in March 1969 and was then buried in South Park Cemetery .
