The Hochiss is 2299  m above sea level. A. the highest mountain in the Rofan , a subgroup of the Brandenberg Alps in the Austrian state of Tyrol . Its northern side has vertical walls up to 350 meters high, through which some difficult climbing routes lead, but from the south the Hochiss is easy to climb.

Surname

The mountain name "Hochiss" is derived from the dialect term "Iss (e)", a name for a pasture or a mountain pasture. "Iss (e)" is a frequent component of field names in the region, especially in the Karwendel and the western Kitzbühel Alps .

Surroundings

The Hochiss rises in the south-western area of the Rofan and forms the highest point of the main ridge that runs west-east here. Neighboring mountains along the west ridge are the 2243 meter high Streichkopf , to the east the Spieljoch with 2236 meters and, separated by the Seekarlscharte , the 2261 meter high Seekarlspitze . To the north the terrain falls down to the Mahrentalalm (1277 m) and to the southwest to the Achensee . The nearest town is Maurach am Achensee in the south, about 4 kilometers as the crow flies , and Steinberg am Rofan a good 6 km to the north .

geology

The subsoil of the Rofan consists of the hard rock main dolomite , in the higher altitudes it changes into plate limestone, which is easier to erode . The Rofan main ridge with the Hochiss consists of hard Oberrhätkalk of the Upper Rhaetium , a geological stage of the Upper Triassic . This scale-shaped rock forms the solid, exposed north faces of the Rofan peaks, popular with climbers. During the Alpid mountain formation , the flatter south side of the main ridge was created by thrusts from south to north.

Tourist development

Since the area was populated early due to its fertile soil and the mountains are easy to climb from the south, there are no records of first ascents. A dense network of hiking trails leads through the Rofan Mountains and the Hochiss is easy to reach from the Erfurter Hütte , at 1831 meters north above Maurach. The normal route (slightest ascent) leads north to below the summit and then in a hairpin from the west up to the summit cross .

Hans Dülfer and Hans Fiechtl were the first climbers to climb the north face of the Hochiss, in 1911 they climbed what is now known as the Alte Weg with the difficulty level UIAA IV- . The Kögl-Schmid- Führe in UIAA grade VI- has existed since 1940 and the route The last problem in UIAA grade VIII +, opened by R. Moser and G. Gapp, since 1996 .

Since 2010, a section of the Achensee 5-summit via ferrata with difficulty C / D has been leading through the southeast flank of the Hochiss.
