Story and chapel

The district of Holtum has been a destination for pilgrims from near and far since the Middle Ages . It is documented that in 1644 a couple donated the money to build the first chapel . The pilgrimage probably originated before this time. In 1684 a new chapel was built because the previous one showed serious structural damage. This new Loreto chapel is still part of the entire complex in which the Holtum miraculous image is kept. In 1757 the St. Joseph Chapel was added. In 1888 the foundation stone for the two-story neo-Gothic main church was laid. The veneration of Mary takes place annually under the name "Holtumer Oktav" in summer.
