Horst Schneider (born February 13, 1952 in Offenbach am Main ) is a German local politician ( SPD ). From January 21, 2006 to January 20, 2018, he was Lord Mayor of the Hessian city of Offenbach am Main.

Life and professional history

After graduating from the Leibnizschule in Offenbach in 1970 , Schneider studied pedagogy to become a teacher for secondary and secondary schools with the subjects of German and social studies at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . From 1976 to 1997 he worked as a teacher at the Integrated Comprehensive School Lindenau in Großauheim as well as at the Ernst Reuter School and at the Friedrich Ebert School (both in Offenbach am Main ). In 1997 he switched from teaching to the state education authority in Offenbach, and after being appointed to the school council in 1998, he finally worked as school authority director from 2000 onwards. He held this office until he was elected mayor of Offenbach in 2004. In 2005, he was elected Lord Mayor in the first round of direct elections with 51.2% of the vote. He took office on January 21, 2006. His second and final term ended on January 20, 2018.

Schneider is married and has two sons.

Political activity

Schneider joined the SPD in 1972 . In 1989 he was appointed city ​​councilor in Offenbach am Main for the first time . In 1991 he took over the chairmanship of the social democratic parliamentary group in the Offenbach city council. On May 6, 2004, Schneider was elected mayor of Offenbach am Main. Only 15 months later, on September 11, 2005, he was elected Lord Mayor of the city with 51.2% of the votes of the Offenbach voters in the first ballot, replacing Gerhard Grandke in this office. In the direct election for Mayor of the City of Offenbach am Main on September 4, 2011, Horst Schneider competed against three competitors. He got 44.4 percent of the votes in the first ballot in the runoff election , which he won on September 18, 2011 with 58 percent against Peter Freier ( CDU ). The turnout was 25.3 percent in the first ballot and 24.3 percent in the runoff election.

Schneider resigned from office on January 20, 2018. Felix Schwenke (SPD) is the successor to the office of Lord Mayor .

The urban boom in Offenbach, in particular the development in the new localities An den Eichen and Offenbach harbor, as well as the redesign of Wilhelmsplatz, is associated with Schneider's tenure .
