The district of Huancarqui is located in the province of Castilla in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of ​​797 km². The 2017 census counted 1609 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1602, in 2007 it was 1445. The district administration is located in the 610  m high village of Huancarqui with 1368 inhabitants (as of 2017). Huancarqui is 3 km southeast of the provincial capital Aplao .

Geographical location

The Huancarqui district extends over the plateau at the foot of the Cordillera Volcánica in the southeast of the province of Castilla. The Río Colca and the Río Majes flow south along the northern and western district boundaries. Irrigated agriculture is practiced along the banks of the Río Majes. Otherwise the area is desert-like.

The district of Huancarqui borders in the southwest with the district Uraca , in the west with the district Aplao , in the north with the district Uñón , in the east with the districts Huambo and Lluta and in the southeast with the district Majes (the last three districts mentioned belong to the province of Caylloma ).
