Hugo-Lancelot of Lusignan

Hugo Lancelot de Lusignan (* 1380 / 1385 on Cyprus ; † 5. August 1442 in Geneva ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church , and the temporary regent of Cyprus .

Life

The son of King Jacob I of Cyprus received his training at the royal court and subsequently became an apostolic protonotary . Antipope John XXIII. made him on July 8, 1411 Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Nicosia . Pope Martin V raised him to Archbishop of Nicosia on March 5, 1421 and also appointed him titular patriarch of Jerusalem in 1424 . On May 24, 1426 Pope Martin V raised him to cardinal status, and on May 27, 1426 he was made cardinal deacon of the titular deaconry Sant'Adriano . Since Lusignan was staying in Cyprus, the Pope sent him the red hat . Here he was also regent for King Janus II in 1426/27 . Although he did not take part in the conclave of 1431 , the titular church of San Clemente was awarded to him on March 11, 1431 and he was finally elevated to cardinal bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Palestrina on April 20, 1431 .

Active as papal legate in the province of Marittima e Campagna, he became commendatabbot of Santa Maria de Pignerol on September 16, 1433 , as well as the abbeys of Montevergine and San Severino . Mentioned at the Curia in February 1435 , the Pope, with whom he was temporarily in dispute, sent him to the Council of Basel . Together with Cardinal Niccolò d'Albergati , he chaired the Arras Peace Conference in 1435 . Appointed Cardinal Bishop of Frascati on June 27, 1436 (there as Hugo III ), he was one of the voters of the antipope Felix V in 1439 , for which Pope Eugene IV dismissed him from the College of Cardinals on April 11, 1440 .
