Wilhelm Udo Ludwig Hugo von Rauchhaupt (born October 28, 1824 in Berlin ; † November 18, 1896 there ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Hugo was a son of the Prussian Colonel Ludwig von Rauchhaupt (1796–1854) and his wife Albertine, born von Alvensleben (1802–1895). His younger brother Hermann (1838-1891) was also a Prussian officer and rose to major general .

Military career

Rauchhaupt visited the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin . Subsequently, on August 9, 1842, he was transferred to the Emperor Alexander Grenadier Regiment of the Prussian Army as Portepeefähnrich and was promoted to Second Lieutenant by mid-December 1842 . In 1848 he took part in the suppression of the barricade uprising and during the campaign against Denmark in the battle near Schleswig . From January to July 1851 Rauchhaupt was a battalion adjutant, rose a year later to prime lieutenant and was then commanded as an assistant teacher at the rifle factory in Potsdam from May 1855 to mid-January 1857. After his promotion to captain , he was then assigned to the school department as a company commander. This was followed by his appointment as company commander on April 12, 1859 . After a brief command as a company commander at III. In the 2nd Battalion in the 2nd Guards Landwehr Regiment, Rauchhaupt was promoted to major and regular staff officer on July 14, 1864 . In this position he was also the garrison representative of Berlin from the beginning of December 1864 and in June 1865 he was in command of the 1st Battalion in the 1st Guards Grenadier Landwehr Regiment. On August 27, 1865 he was appointed commander of the fusilier battalion that Rauchhaupt led a year later during the war against Austria in the battles near Trautenau and Königgrätz and in the enclosure of Josefstadt . At the end of March 1868, Rauchhaupt rose to lieutenant colonel and on July 18, 1870, on the occasion of the war against France, he was initially commander of the 1st Guards Grenadier Landwehr Regiment for the duration of the mobilization . For the further duration of the mobile situation he took over command of the 3rd Magdeburg Infantry Regiment No. 66 on September 2, 1870 . In this capacity he was involved in the sieges of Strasbourg and Paris and in the battle at Epinay. Awarded the Iron Cross II class, Rauchhaupt was promoted to colonel on the day of the imperial proclamation .

After the preliminary peace of Versailles he was appointed regimental commander on March 29, 1871. In position à la suite of his regiment, Rauchhaupt was initially charged with the command of the 29th Infantry Brigade in Cologne on October 15, 1874 and was appointed brigade commander on January 18, 1875 with the promotion to major general.
