Location of the hussar barracks in Hesse |
The hussar barracks is a former barracks south of Sontra . It covered an area of 20.5 hectares. It was built between 1960 and 1961. Over 1,000 soldiers were stationed here.
The barracks were partly laid out in terraces and divided into an accommodation area and a technical area. The farm building, around which the company and staff buildings were grouped, formed the center of the accommodation area. The company buildings were built with one to three storeys using clinker brick. They are from the early 1970s. Air raid shelters are partially located under or next to the buildings.
The site included the site training area , the site shooting range 442/1, the training range for anti-aircraft defense for all troops 442/2, the site munitions defeat 442/3, the site telecommunications system 415/133 and the telecommunications system Bundeswehr 401/127. The Sontra site administration was also located here from 1962 to 1991 . For medical care, the dentist group 405/5 was based in the barracks and the medical area 44/5 was equipped with material.
Deployment history
The tank reconnaissance battalion 5, which was set up on July 1, 1956 in Neu Tramm near Dannenberg (Elbe) from Border Guard Group 6 of the Federal Border Guard , was initially relocated to Hemer . At the end of 1956 the battalion came to Fritzlar . From April 1, 1957, it was assigned to the 5th Panzer Division there . It was not until December 14, 1962 that Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion 5 finally moved into the newly built barracks in Sontra. The training company 8/5 was also stationed here in the 1960s and 1970s.
In 1966, at the suggestion of the mayor of the city of Sontra, the name “Hussar barracks” was given to the armed forces site by the then Federal Minister of Defense Kai-Uwe von Hassel .
Panzerjägerkompanie 130, which was set up on April 1, 1959 from 3rd Company of Panzerjäger Battalion 5 in Wetzlar and was subordinate to Panzergrenadierbrigade 13 , was moved to the Hussar barracks in Sontra in 1968.
With Army Structure 4 , Panzergrenadierbrigade 13, Panzerbrigade 34 and Panzerbrigade 15 surrendered their brigade reconnaissance platoons 13, 34 and 15 to the armored reconnaissance battalion 5. They were each incorporated into the battalion's companies as IV platoons. In addition, the 5 radar platoon was subordinate to the armored reconnaissance battalion 5. The battalion was also subordinate to the tank reconnaissance company 3/5.
The Sontra driving school group was set up on January 1, 1986 and dissolved with the formation of the strength training center in Hessisch Lichtenau in mid-1994.
On April 1, 1993, the 5th Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion was reclassified to the light corps reconnaissance battalion.
From the 5th company of the 5th Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion, the Panzer Reconnaissance Company 140 was reorganized on October 1, 1993, but remained subordinate to the 5th Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion.
As part of the reorganization of the Army of the Bundeswehr ("Army Structure 5"), the Panzerjägerkompanie 130 in Sontra was subordinated to the Panzergrenadierbrigade 5 on April 1, 1993 . The company was finally dissolved with effect from September 30, 1996.
On July 1, 2001, when the 5th Panzer Division was dissolved, the 5th Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion was subordinated to the 7th Panzer Division .
The Panzer Reconnaissance Company 210, formed on April 1, 1993 in Augustdorf from the 4th Company of the 7th Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion, was relocated to the Hussar Barracks in 2003 together with the Brigade Reconnaissance Company of the 21st Panzer Brigade in Sontra and subordinated to the 5th Tank Reconnaissance Battalion. In addition, the field message train 7 was set up in Sontra.
Due to the dissolution of the 7th Panzer Division and the planned closure of the site in Sontra, the 5th Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion was subordinated to the 23 Mountain Infantry Brigade on July 1, 2006 .
The tank reconnaissance company 210 was detached again in 2006 from the unit of the tank reconnaissance battalion 5, reclassified into the reconnaissance company 210 and relocated back to Augustdorf near Bonn.
Panzer Reconnaissance Company 140 was disbanded at the end of 2006.
From August 2007, parts of the Armored Reconnaissance Battalion 5 will be used to set up the Mountain Reconnaissance Battalion 230 in Füssen .
The farewell roll call of the 5th Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion took place on December 18, 2007 in Sontra. The unit was decommissioned on December 31, 2007. At the end of August 2008, the hussar barracks were finally closed.
The closure of the barracks received a lot of media coverage. In particular, the associated challenges for the affected municipality in structurally weak areas were discussed.
conversion
After the Bundeswehr site was abandoned, the federal government transferred the administration and sale of the barracks to the Federal Agency for Real Estate . Initially, the association for intermunicipal cooperation between the city of Sontra and the communities of Nentershausen and Herleshausen tried to acquire the site. In 2011 the purchase was initially rejected by the association assembly due to the high costs. Finally, in 2012, the barracks properties were sold to the association for 420,000 euros. 72 percent of the purchase price was covered by the state program "Urban Redevelopment Hessen". In the same year, a partial area was designated as a special solar area for the construction of solar systems through a development plan.
In 2012, a purchase application from a logistics company in the automotive industry was rejected by the Zweckverband because it would bring few new jobs with it. Rather, the aim would be to market the site in a smaller scale. However, it was rented to the logistics company.
The draft of a development plan no. 3 "Hussar barracks", which was commissioned by the Zweckverband, has been available since 2014. It provides for the creation of a commercial and an industrial area.
At the end of 2014, work on the infrastructure of the new "Husarenpark industrial park" was completed. The Zweckverband had invested a total of 1.87 million in renovation and renovation. 50 percent of the costs for the development were financed from funds from the structural funds of the European Union and the state of Hesse . After its completion, the new Bundesautobahn 44 will pass the former barracks at a distance of 2.5 kilometers.
