IC 4856 is an irregular galaxy of the Hubble type IBm in the constellation Telescopium in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 145 million light years from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years across .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 6788 .
The object was discovered by DeLisle Stewart on September 17, 1901 .
