The Ilek ( Russian Илек ; Kazakh Елек , Jelek or Елік , Jelik ) is a 623 km long left tributary of the Urals in Kazakhstan and Russia .

Course and hydrology

The Ilek arises in the western Kazakh steppe about 10 km north of the city of Qandyaghasch (until 1997 Oktyabrsk ) from the rivers Qaraghandy (Karagandy) from the left and Scharyk from the right. The Qaraghandy is sometimes referred to as ilek from Qandyaghasch onwards. The Scharyk as the larger of the source rivers is about 75 km long, so that the total length of the Ilek with the Scharyk is about 700 km. The Ilek initially flows through the Aqtöbe area in a northerly direction, past its administrative center, the city of Aqtöbe . It gradually turns north-west to west, crosses the border with Russia and flows through the southern part of Orenburg Oblast , before reaching the Russian-Kazakh border again. Below the confluence of the only significant tributary, the 225 km (with source river Karachobda 363 km) long Chobda (also called Bolshaya Chobda, Great Chobda ) coming from the left (southeast ) 184 km above the Ilek estuary, the state border follows the river for long stretches River course. The Kazakh side is already part of the Western Kazakhstan area . The Ilek finally empties into the Urals, which marks the border between Europe and Asia , 1085 km from its confluence with the Caspian Sea . The mouth is located a little below the village of Ilek , named after the river , a few kilometers from the border with Kazakhstan, about 130 km west of the Russian city of Orenburg and east of the Kazakh city of Oral (Uralsk).

The catchment area of the river covers 41,300 km². It usually freezes over between the second half of November and the second half of April. In summer it has very little water.

traffic

The Ilek is not navigable.

The railway line Orenburg - Aqtöbe - Türkistan  - Tashkent follows the entire upper and middle reaches of the river from Sol-Ilezk up to its formation at Qandyaghasch , as well as the trunk road following the railway line (south of Aktobe as A-27). Below Sol-Ilezk, the Saratov  - Oral - Sol-Ilezk railway crosses the Ilek, and a few kilometers above the confluence the Orenburg - Oral road, along which the Russian R335 and Kazakh A-30 are the border crossing on the river.
