The Ilz breakthrough (also Oberhaus tunnel ) is a two-tube road tunnel through the Georgsberg in Passau .

location

The Ilz breakthrough is part of the federal highway 12 as a tunnel and connects the Passau districts of Anger and Ilzstadt . The two tunnels were built in 1762 and 1947 between the two castles Veste Oberhaus and Veste Niederhaus and the Church of St. Salvator . One of the two bridges leads to each of the two tunnel tubes over the Ilz , which flows into the Danube shortly after the tunnel at the Veste Niederhaus . On the opposite side of the Ilz, the B 388 branches off towards Obernzell and Wegscheid .

Since the Ilz breakthrough is the only direct inner-city road connection between the north-eastern districts of Grubweg and Hals and the city center and also carries traffic from two main roads through the Georgsberg, the Ilz breakthrough plays a central role in the transport links between these two districts and the eastern parts of the districts of Passau and Freyung-Grafenau . In terms of traffic, the Ilz breakthrough is a bottleneck . If the Ilz breakthrough is blocked, the 2323 state road and the PA 93 motorway feeder are the next possible bypasses, but this means a detour via Hutthurm and Ruderting or Neukirchen vorm Wald , which is why alternative traffic concepts in local politics have been controversial for years to be discussed.

history

The first tunnel, now in the east, was built in 1762 together with Angerstrasse under Prince-Bishop Joseph Maria von Thun . It is therefore only a little older than the Sigmundstor in Salzburg . The construction of the tunnel resulted in a lawsuit by the Niedernburg Monastery at the Reich Chamber of Commerce, as this damaged the “ crossing ” of the Niedernburg Monastery into Passau's Ilzstadt. As compensation, the monastery was subsequently allowed to levy customs duties at the tunnel, but this was soon discontinued because the costs were higher than the income.

The second, western tunnel tube was not created until 1947. In the course of the expansion of the Angerstraße, both tunnel tubes were enlarged to their present size. The creation of a third tube for pedestrians and cyclists was at an early planning stage. On April 28, 2013, a council and a referendum was held, in which a majority decided against the construction of a third tunnel tube. (For legal details see article Citizens' petitions and referendums in Bavaria ).

The so-called "Great Georgsberg Tunnel" is being discussed as a further alternative. This would lead the B 12 from Bayerwaldstraße from about the length of the river with a bridge over the Ilz and the Bschütt-Park and through an approximately 1.6 km long tunnel through the Georgsberg directly to the Schanzlbrücke .
