In late 2015, lead actor Kevin Whately left the series after he first accepted the role for Morse a good thirty years earlier . With Whately's departure, the series was discontinued after nine seasons.

characters

  • The Detective Inspector (or Commissioner) DI Robert "Robbie" Lewis was Morse's sergeant . After the death of his wife in a traffic accident and the culprit escaped in an accident, he initially went abroad, but comes back in the pilot film Reputation and is scheduled for a “quiet job” as a trainer. Sergeant Hathaway, who picked him up at the airport, is called to a new sleep laboratory case but no longer has a senior inspector. Lewis and Hathaway initially form a good "team" just in this case, because Lewis would rather throw himself into work than accept the boss's plan. He comes from the north of England and has a very distant view of the academic environment at Oxford. He has an unusual flair for solving murder cases. At the end of Reputation, Hathaway surprisingly votes for him as his inspector. The widower's private life does not play a major role at first; he has two children, u. a. Lynn, who is married and expecting a child.
  • DS James "Jim" Hathaway is a very reserved man. He has a good command of Latin, which is useful in the academic environment at Oxford and is due to the fact that he first studied theology at the University of Cambridge . In “ Demons of the Past ”, the Oxford professor Gold disparagingly explains his alleged knowledge gaps with his studies in Cambridge. He was also a student in a seminary before dropping out and starting a career in the police force. The highly intelligent Hathaway barely shows his feelings, but is a very useful employee in crime. Nothing is known about relationships in private life; one can tell his mood from the extent of his cigarette consumption. In the episode " Old School Ties " a younger man recognizes him as the head of his former school and gives him the old nickname "WC" that was given to him behind his back. Hathaway replies: "I don't dare to ask ...", but of course he gets the answer: Wolfgang Christ. Even then, his classmates said he couldn't decide what he wanted to be, Mozart or Jesus .
Sergeant Hathaway's aloof demeanor makes him seem unemotional or withdrawn, but he is a perfect match for Lewis. Where other people would have a big grin, there is only a short twitch of the corners of his mouth. At an early meeting, Lewis had complained of the absence of God because of the painful loss of his wife, "... where is your God ?" He asked the former theology student. When Lewis later addresses his violent remark again, Hathaway says only "God will have missed it", and then he grins briefly when Lewis is out of sight.
  • Dr. Laura Hobson is the pathologist Lewis often meets on the scene and in forensic medicine . She is single and childless. Lewis still knows them from his earlier days in Oxford (Morse). In the episode Late Atonement , the professional relationship becomes a little more private for the first time when Hobson Lewis reports of an unofficial follow-up examination and asks him "into her office", which is the cleaning and changing room because she did not report her colleague's mistake in the official Want to discuss the framework. She addresses the commonality that both prefer to do everything themselves so that it is done correctly. When Lewis says with a wink, "You're only doing this because you like me," she replies with an evasive joke. In terms of character and as two single people of similar age, both would go well together, but a private relationship develops very tentatively, also with regard to the long unexplained death of Lewis' wife. During the seventh season, Laura Hobson and Lewis become a couple.
  • Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent is the head of DI Lewis. She is a detective director with a very determined demeanor. She is already well connected in the social life of the university town, although she only came to Oxford after the time from Morse . She demands that her subordinates' investigations be based on well-founded suspicion and carried out with the necessary discretion; however, it in no way undermines the work of Lewis and Hathaway. Jean Innocent is always well dressed, almost elegantly. When she met Lewis at the scene of the crime in the morning, who slept very poorly because of the jetlag , she only said: "Have you shaved yet?"
