The InterRegio ( InterRegio, abbreviated IR ) is a type of train in Switzerland .

The InterRegio train type was introduced in 1995 in order to be able to differentiate between express trains with modern, fully air-conditioned wagons from those with conventional, non-air-conditioned wagons, which, in contrast to InterCitys, have a similar stop frequency as express trains. The German concept of the Interregios , which has since been discontinued, was probably taken as a model. Today the InterRegio is a long-distance train in contrast to the RegioExpress , which belongs to regional traffic .

history

At the time of its introduction, there were express trains that had a higher level of comfort such as air-conditioned cars and catering facilities, while others could hardly be distinguished from regional trains . Before the introduction of the InterRegios, the SBB tried to represent express trains with air-conditioned cars using appropriate pictograms in the timetable, which was then no longer necessary. The higher-quality express trains became InterRegios, the stopping interval remained the same.

On December 12, 2004 the classic express trains were abolished. The remaining express trains were divided into RegioExpresse and InterRegios, the former being regional trains , the latter being long-distance trains . With this new classification, the older InterRegio definition gradually took a back seat. The trains of the Voralpen-Express , which can be assigned to regional traffic, ran until 2013 under the InterRegio train category. Due to the consequent division of RE into regional traffic (Switzerland) and IR into long-distance traffic as of the 2018/19 timetable change, there will be some adjustments.

The Zentralbahn narrow-gauge railway offers InterRegio connections on its network.

Differentiation from InterCitys

The SBB even differ by 2017 InterRegios of intercity trains as follows:

Train characterization InterRegio InterRegio InterCity InterCity
Connection interval connects regions connects centers
air-conditioned cars usually always
Catering optional Restaurant and minibar
special compartments no Business and
relaxation zone, children's compartment or zone

In the past, the InterRegio and InterCity train categories changed occasionally while the train was running (e.g. Basel – Zurich – Chur), or the InterRegio served the same stations as the Intercity (e.g. Zurich Hauptbahnhof - Weinfelden ) on individual sections of the route .

vehicles

At the time of its introduction, standard coaches IV were primarily used, often reinforced by non-air-conditioned coaches (usually standard coaches I , standard coaches II or Bpm 51 ). Some of the reinforcement standard cars I and II (A, B and D) were given a new coat of paint called the "New Look", colloquially they were called "InterRegio colors" at the end of the 1990s.

As of the 2016/17 timetable, the following vehicles were used as planned:

Line network

InterRegio lines of the SBB

With the introduction of the 2018 SBB timetable, the interregios, as well as the intercitys , were given line numbers. The logic of the numbering is based on that of the national road network (starting with 1 analogous to A1 Geneva – Zurich – St. Gallen, with 3 analogous to A3 Basel – Zurich – Chur, with 9 analogous to A9 Lausanne – Brig etc.). As of December 2019, the InterRegio network comprises the following lines:

InterRegio lines of the private railways

The Zentralbahn , the Montreux-Berner Oberland-Bahn and the Rhaetian Railway also operate interregional lines on their network:

Planned InteRegio lines

The RE line Bern - La Chaux-de-Fonds , which was previously operated by BLS , will be taken over by SBB in December 2020 and run as IR66. SBB has bought 7 new FLIRT 3s from Stadler Rail for operation . These are also to be used between Basel and Biel on a new InterRegio line from December 2025 . No numbering is known yet. Furthermore, the IR17 line will now be operated by BLS and only on the Bern - Burgdorf - Olten route. The former IR17 now operates as IR35.
