The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace ( Latin : Pontificium Consilium de Iustitia et Pace ) was initiated by the Second Vatican Council on January 6, 1967 by the Motu Proprio Catholicam Christi Ecclesiam Paul VI. established as the Pontifical Commission Iustitia et Pax .
With the Motu Proprio Iustitiam et Pacem of December 10, 1976, the commission became a permanent dicastery within the curia .
Under John Paul II the Commission Iustitia et Pax was elevated to the Pontifical Council by the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus of June 28, 1988.
