J. Peter Schwalm (* 1970 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German composer and music producer in the region electronic music , film , theater , ballet and contemporary music acts and the general public, especially through his work with the British musician Brian Eno known is. He lives and works in Frankfurt am Main.

Life and work

Between 1989 and 1991 Schwalm studied music for four semesters, majoring in drums, at the Frankfurt Musikwerkstatt . In 1993 Schwalm founded the experimental electro-jazz project Slop Shop. He published the first works of this project on the Frankfurt label Infracom.

In 1996 Schwalm founded the Poets Club Records label, which passed into Christian Kessler's possession in 2000. On this label Schwalm released numerous 12 ” Maxisingles as well as compilations in the areas of electronica , nu jazz and drum and bass . Schwalm released his first CD on Poets Club Records. This first CD of his Slop Shop project, entitled Makrodelia, drew the attention of various musicians such as Brian Eno, Peter Kruder and Ryūichi Sakamoto .

Brian Eno then contacted Schwalm to offer him a collaboration that only a few months later resulted in a joint appearance in the art and exhibition hall of the Federal Republic of Germany . Were involved also Holger Czukay , bassist Raoul Walton and drummer Jem Atai. In the following years Schwalm and Eno worked on various projects and released the two CDs Music for Onmyo-ji (2000 JVC Victor) and Drawn from Life (2001 Venture / Virgin Music UK).

In 2001 Schwalm and Brian Eno also designed a joint, multi-channel sound installation in the volcanic crater Volcan del Cuervo on Lanzarote . In an interview with the German music magazine Keyboards, Schwalm explains the approach and the concept of this project. To promote the album Drawn from Life , Schwalm and Brian Eno went on a tour in 2002 that took them to Japan, Spain and Portugal. Schwalm was also involved in the Artists Against AIDS Worldwide project initiated by Bono with the title what's going on . In 2003 Schwalm and Brian Eno worked on the score for Nicolas Winding Refn's film Fear X , which was created in collaboration with scriptwriter Hubert Selby and cameraman Larry Smith .

In 2006 Schwalm took part in the Wagner Reloaded project, which reworked Richard Wagner's music in various projects. This project was premiered in 2006 on the occasion of the Point Festival in Kristiansand / Norway together with the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra. Other participants included Eivind Aarset , Audun Kleive , Lars Danielsson , Bugge Wesseltoft and Jan Bang .

In 2006 Schwalm released the first CD under its own name. Musikain works with different styles of music with the involvement of different vocalists. Brian Eno, the Norwegian singer Kari Kleiv and the British singer Imogen Heap took part in the production as guest vocalists .

Schwalm also worked on productions for Das neue Werk ; a concert series of the NDR , for which composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen , Pierre Boulez , Krzysztof Penderecki and György Ligeti composed and performed new material.

Schwalm composed music for a production by the choreographer James Sutherland for the Stuttgart Ballet entitled Impaired Ground .

Schwalm also wrote the music for the play Don't look now on behalf of the Sheffield Theaters for the Lyceum Theater in Sheffield , which was also performed at the Lyric Theater Hammersmith in London . The script for this contributed Nell Leyshon ; Directed by Lucy Bailey .

Schwalm first appeared in the radio play area in 2008. For this purpose, Schwalm composed and produced the music for the radio play The Ordinary Way , based on the script by Jean-Claude Carrière and directed by the award - winning director Norbert Schaeffer on behalf of NDR. Together with the violinist Nell Catchpole, he led workshops at the Guildhall School for Music and Drama in London.

Since 2008 Schwalm has been working more and more with the guitarist Eivind Aarset. They performed together at the Punktfestival in Norway, at the Enjoy Jazz Festival in Mannheim and in the Rolf Liebermann Studio in Hamburg on the occasion of a concert for "Das neue Werk".

In 2013 he was commissioned by the British ensemble Icebreaker to create a new piece of music from Kraftwerk's previous musical material. The premiere of the project, entitled Kraftwerk Uncovered: A Future Past , took place in January 2014 at the Science Museum in London, followed by a tour with concerts in Great Britain and Ireland. In 2013 Schwalm was commissioned by the Hessischer Rundfunk to put together a concert for the 44th Frankfurt Jazz Festival .

On behalf of the NDR , Schwalm initiated a project with the English video artist Sophie Clements as part of the NDR Kultur Neo Klub concerts, which dealt with Johann Sebastian Bach's topics. The Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset also took part in the premiere in the foyer of the NDR . The second part of this concert series took place together with Michael Wollny in the Hamburg "Mojo-Klub". Wollny and Schwalm dedicated themselves to the interpretation of pieces by the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin .

Schwalm has been an artist on the English label "Rare Noise Records" since June 2015, which released its album "The Beauty of Disaster" in February 2016. It is a blueprint for the future of electronic-acoustic music and reflects Schwalm's personal development over the past five years.
