The project released the charity single What's Going On on October 31, 2001 , a cover version of the Marvin Gaye classic . The single was released under the label Play-Tone and Columbia Records in nine different versions. Producers were Bono and Jermaine Dupri . The song was recorded on September 5-7 in the days around the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards in several studio events organized by Bono.

In addition to the two producers, Destiny's Child ( Beyoncé Knowles , Kelly Rowland , Michelle Williams ), * NSYNC ( Justin Timberlake , JC Chasez , Lance Bass , Joey Fatone , Chris Kirkpatrick ), the Backstreet Boys ( Alexander James McLean , Nick Carter , Brian T. Littrell , Kevin Richardson , Howie Dorough ), Aaron Lewis ( Staind ), Questlove , Mobb Deep ( Prodigy and Havoc ), Alicia Keys , Angie Martínez , Britney Spears , Chris Martin ( Coldplay ), Christina Aguilera , Nelly , Queen Latifah , Darren Hayes ( Savage Garden ), Elijah Blue , Eve , Faith Evans , Limp Bizkit ( Fred Durst and John Otto ), Gwen Stefani ( No Doubt ), Jagged Edge , LL Cool J , Ja Rule , Jennifer Lopez , Fabolous , Lil 'Kim , Marc Dorsey , Mary J. The following versions were released on different maxi CDs and LPs. In addition to the musicians originally involved, there were also versions by Brian Eno , Moby , Junior Vasquez , Mick Guzauski , Mike Mangini / Pop Rox and The Neptunes . The mixes differed in both the musical direction and the choice of staff.
