occupation

Jack (cross-reference: Jack Unterweger - Poet. Seducer. Serial killer. ) Is an Austrian feature film directed by Elisabeth Scharang in 2015 . The film deals with the story of the murderer Jack Unterweger , whereby Scharang deliberately leaves open the question of Unterweger's guilt in relation to the series of murders after his release from prison.

The film premiered on August 8, 2015 at the Locarno International Film Festival . It opened in Austrian cinemas on September 11, 2015. The film was released in Germany on May 20, 2016 as a direct-to-video release.

action

Jack Unterweger , who grew up in the red-light district and has so far been conspicuous because of minor thefts , is arrested for the murder of a young woman and sentenced to life imprisonment. In prison he began to write, which aroused the interest of numerous intellectuals. After about 15 years, he was released from prison, mainly because of the advocacy of his prominent supporters, and advanced as a “Häfnpoet” to a heartthrob and part of the so-called “ Seitenblicke- Gesellschaft”. He writes his first novel, which sells well. The killer seems to have been rehabilitated.

But after a series of unsolved prostitute murders, he is again targeted by the police. In 1994 Unterweger was tried again, but killed himself in custody before the verdict became final. The files are closed without result.

reception

Kurt Zechner from skip.at saw a "haunting, grandiose acted drama" that did not deal with the question of guilt, but instead took a look at the "enigmatic character of Jack Unterweger". Jack is a "fascinating psychogram of a torn one" with a "deep and truthful look into human abysses".

According to Vienna.at, the film "only touches individual biographical cornerstones". Scharang largely spares Unterweger's environment; add a few things and leave a lot in the dark. Johannes Krisch is "beyond any doubt", but in the multi-layered presentation "everyone can read something different". That makes the film "strong, but - at least in Austria - also vulnerable".

Ditta Rudle criticized the fact that the viewer does not learn anything about what it "really looked like in the man in there". The film missed its effect despite the “star cast”. Scharang criticized "nothing and nobody" and did not provide an answer to the question about the fascination that Unterweger had exercised. Rudle rated the “breathtaking” camera work by Jörg Widmer as positive .
