The Jahn Mountain Gymnastics Festival is a multi-day, traditional, international sporting event, since August 11 1935 at the annual rhythm on the Bückeberg in Schaumburg in Lower Saxony , Germany , takes place. It was named after Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, who was apostrophized as "gymnastics father" . The mountain gymnastics festival held within the Weserbergland Schaumburg-Hameln nature park is open to international participants; So far, active participants from Germany, Austria , Switzerland and Italy ( South Tyrol ) have participated. In 1995, the Schaumburg children's and youth gymnastics festival, which has been taking place since 1967 with up to 1000 participants, was incorporated, but it still operates under this name.

history

1935 to 1945

The event is based on a running event organized by the Deutsche Turnerschaft (DT) until 1934 , the run around the Bückeberg , which stretched over a distance of 15 kilometers. In 1934 and 1935 overburden from the Obernkirchen sandstone quarries was used to create a gymnastics field on the Bückeberg with the help of gymnasts from the district's clubs. This was near the Jahn tower, but is now leveled and no longer visible.

The annual mountain gymnastics festivals held on the Bückeberg from 1935 were initially called Jahn Memorial Gymnastics . The first took place on August 11, 1935. Oberturnwart and organizer was Ernst Stahlhut, who set up a mountain gymnastics festival committee.

In contrast to most other mountain sports festivals, the events even took place throughout the Second World War with a participation described as "extremely good", for example on August 24, 1944. Many of the gymnasts came directly from the front during their home leave to Bückeberg, including also the organizer Stahlhut.

1945 to 1985

However, the event had to be suspended due to the restrictions imposed by the British occupation forces after the end of the war in 1945. Gymnastics associations were not yet allowed to re-establish themselves, as sports clubs and associations were considered to be carriers of National Socialist ideology from 1933 to 1945 . The first post-war mountain gymnastics festival on the Bückeberg was therefore not held until 1946 under the direction of the Sportkreis.

In 1948 the Jahn memorial gymnastics was renamed, since then it has been called the Jahn mountain gymnastics festival on the Bückebergen . In 1960 the 25th anniversary could be celebrated.

The Hanover gymnastics district transferred responsibility for the Jahn-Bergturnfest in 1966 to the Turngau Schaumburg. The mountain gymnastics festival committee that had now been formed was in future under the direction of Hermann Harting.

After the old stone carving settlement of the Obernkirchen sandstone quarries was rededicated to the Bückeberg Youth, Education and Leisure Center (JBFC) in the mid-1970s, the new sports facilities that were created in this context became the venue for the Jahn mountain gymnastics festival from 1979 . The multi-purpose hall belonging to this complex has since been used as the competition and organization office of the event.

1985 was the 50th anniversary of the Jahn-Bergturnfest , which was celebrated with a parade and a festive event.

From 1995 to date has been parallel to the Jahn-Mountain Gymnastics Festival held Schaumburg children and youth gymnastics festival incorporated and has since then been held as a unit, so that the number of participants of the Jahn-Mountain Gymnastics Festival were increased by several hundred children and adolescents.

Since 2001, the Olympic medalist in artistic gymnastics , Bernd Jäger , involved in the organization of the Mountain Gymnastics Festival, an important support even at the turn shows. Hermann Harting, who was responsible for the organization and management for almost four decades, handed over to his successor Olaf Köhler in 2005. In 2010 the 75th anniversary of the Jahn-Bergturnfest was celebrated with a gala event and a pageant. In 2011, the event's own logo was created for the first time, which will symbolize the event in the future and will be gradually introduced in all areas of application.

terrain

The basis for the Jahn-Bergturnfest was created in 1934/35 with the backfilling of overburden from the Obernkirchen sandstone quarries . The area in front of the Zum Bückeberg inn was found to be suitable as a competition area , from which one had a good view of the surrounding area at the time. The inn served as a competition office during the events. The newly created sports facilities at the nearby Bückeberg Youth, Education and Leisure Center (JBFC) have been in use since 1979 .

The extensive sports facilities are completely surrounded by forest. An adjacent forest clearing became the Jahn meadow, which every year houses the large tent camp of the athletes and their companions. The different sports facilities are suitable for a variety of sports and disciplines, including the attached multi-purpose hall. The environment can also be included in the competitions.

organization

2007 - When organizing the events, the most important thing is motivation , coordination and optimal timing of the numerous volunteers , and again and again a certain talent for improvisation

Volunteering

An important element of the Jahn-Bergturnfest has always been the voluntary commitment of the numerous helpers, who have made it possible year after year that this event has already existed for 75 years in 2010. Among others, the German Red Cross (DRK) for first aid, the German Life-Rescue Society (DLRG) for swimming and the Technical Relief Organization (THW) with a large tent are on site. Whether conception, organization, administration, internet , photography and video, public relations and advertising , promotion or merchandising , judges, gymnastics assistance or catering , volunteers of all ages with the appropriate know-how are constantly being sought.

The organizer of the Jahn mountain gymnastics festival and the parallel Schaumburg children's and youth gymnastics festival is the Jahn mountain gymnastics committee in the gymnastics district Schaumburg of the Lower Saxony gymnastics association. V.

The new logo of the event, developed from autumn 2010, presented in February 2011 and confirmed by the Jahn-Bergturnfest committee on April 2nd, shows the current trademark 4 F ( Turnerkreuz ) of the German Gymnastics Federation in connection with a stylized three-tier low mountain range silhouette, which represents the Symbolizes elevations of the Bückeberg. Both graphics stand in this combination for the term "mountain gymnastics festival". The logo in the context of the future corporate design (CD) of the event is based on the color and logo world introduced by the German Gymnastics Federation.

The logo will serve as the future identification feature of the event and will be gradually introduced for all areas of application in addition to the official sans serif font Lucida Grande ( Mac OS X ) for the event. Associated with this is a consistently uniform appearance of the event, which should stand for a contemporary and professional overall appearance and is associated with a corresponding claim. As part of these measures, the website of the event is to be completely redesigned by the end of March 2011, as are all internal and external prints (correspondence, posters, competition forms, certificates), medals and trophies, signs, flags and banners, the clothing of the volunteers . volunteers), promotional items, merchandising products etc.

meeting

The month of June , before the school summer vacation, is the annual event date. For 2011, June 24th to 26th was set, and June 22nd to 24th for 2012 (unfortunately the organizer has been giving incorrect dates for 2012 for a long time).

Infrastructure

Before the event, the participating groups or associations set up a larger tent camp on the Jahn meadow, on which the large Jahn memorial is also located. The participants can use the sanitary facilities of the JBFC Bückeberg. Catering is offered for participants, volunteers and spectators . The multi-purpose hall on the competition area is used, among other things, as a competition office, info point and central contact point for organizers, helpers, trainers, supervisors, athletes and spectators.

The competition area on the Bückeberg is barrier-free , the same applies to changing rooms, showers and toilets. If there is sufficient demand, competitions for disabled athletes are possible. Even group / training / seminar rooms with the appropriate technology are available.

The majority of the competitions, including the swimming competitions ( Obernkirchen ), take place in the open air, a smaller proportion, the trampoline gymnastics, in a gym ( Stadthagen ).

Cenotaphs

2010 - Jahn memorial stone

The Jahn tower is in the immediate vicinity of the Jahn mountain gymnastics festival . There is a Jahn meadow on which a memorial was erected as a reminder of the life's work of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn in 1955. This shows the gymnast's cross , the name of the gymnast's father, his birth and death year 1778-1852 and the dedication according to his words “The youth must be led back to a true youth”. The memorial stone was restored in 2009/2010 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Jahn-Bergturnfest with the help of donations, a large bronze camée with a portrait structured in relief, the first names and dates of life as well as the characterizing inscription "Patriot, teacher, gymnastics father, politician" were also added appropriate. The Camée is a copy; the original is on the Jahn memorial stone in the Blumenwall in Rinteln , which has existed since June 9, 1912.
