Jazz on a Summer's Day is a documentary released in 1960 set at the Newport Jazz Festival on Sunday July 6, 1958. The director and cameraman was the respected advertising, fashion and press photographer Bert Stern , whose only film this is. The film is generally considered to be one of the most beautiful jazz films, in which the most diverse styles “have their say”, from bop and cool jazz, the avant-garde to traditional jazz, as well as gospel, rock and rhythm and blues.
The film mixes images of water and the city with the musicians and the audience at the festival. Scenes from the America's Cup yacht race in 1958 are also used. The film gets by for the most part without dialogue or offtext , apart from occasional comments by MC Willis Conover . Therefore, it makes sense to list the groups in the order in which they appear:
- Jimmy Giuffre Trio: Giuffre, Bob Brookmeyer , Jim Hall ( The Train and the River ),
- Thelonious Monk Trio: Monk, Henry Grimes , Roy Haynes ( Blue Monk )
- Sonny Stitt and Sal Salvador ( Blues ),
- Anita O'Day ( Sweet Georgia Brown , Tea for Two , with Max Roach ),
- George Shearing Quintet ( Rondo )
- Dinah Washington ( All of me ), with Terry Gibbs , Urbie Green , Max Roach
- Gerry Mulligan Quartet: Mulligan, Art Farmer ( Catch as catch can )
- Big Maybelle Smith ( Ain't mad at you ),
- Chuck Berry ( Sweet little sixteen , accompanied by Teagarden and Jo Jones )
- Chico Hamilton Quintet ( Blue Sands , with Eric Dolphy ), John Pisano (guitar)
- Louis Armstrong and his All-Stars: Jack Teagarden , Trummy Young (trombone), Danny Barcelona (drums), Billy Kyle (piano) ( Up a Lazy River , Tiger Rag , Rockin 'Chair , When the Saints Go Marching In )
- Mahalia Jackson ( Didn't it rain , Shout all over , Lords prayer )
You can also see u. a. Buck Clayton , Peanuts Hucko , Ray Mosca , Bill Crow, and Armando Peraza .
The screenplay for the film was written by Albert D'Annibale and Arnold Perl . In 1999 he was inducted into the National Film Registry .
The film was also released on DVD.
