Jennifer (also: Jenifer or Jenniffer ) is a female given name . Name day is May 30th .

Jennifer is the Cornish version of the Welsh name Gwenhwyfar . The name is made up of gwen "white, beautiful" and hwyfar "smooth, soft", which means "beautiful face, white cheek".

In Arthurian legend it is the name of King Arthur's wife (see Guinevere ).

Previously practically uncommon, the name Jennifer gained popularity in Germany in the mid-1960s. From the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, the name was continuously among the ten most frequently given female first names. Since then, its popularity has waned.
