Jigsaw (aka Saw VIII or Saw Legacy is) an American horror - splatter film and the eighth part of the Saw franchises. Directed by the two brothers Peter and Michael Spierig , while the script was written for the first time by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger . The film opened in German cinemas on October 26, 2017, and in US cinemas one day later.

action

The criminal Edgar Munsen escapes on a roof with the police during a chase. There he starts "a game" using the remote control. He is shot and seriously injured by policeman Halloran and his colleagues.

Five people are trapped in a room in a gloomy barn, each with a noose around his neck that leads to a wall of circular saws. A sound recording by John Kramer explains that in order to escape they must sacrifice blood and confess their sins. At the same time the chains begin to pull them towards the circular saws. Four of the prisoners survived by deliberately injuring themselves on the saws and thus being able to make a blood sacrifice. A man who was passed out during the news and woke up just before the end of the game is dragged into the saws.

The next scene reveals that group member Carly accidentally caused the death of an asthma sufferer by stealing her purse that held her emergency inhaler. After that, three syringes are revealed; one contains an antidote to a poison injected into it. Another saline solution and the third hydrofluoric acid. She is given the choice of choosing a syringe, while all prisoners are pulled towards the ceiling by their neck chains and threaten to be hanged. The players learn beforehand that the mechanism will only be stopped if Carly injects herself with the antidote. Numbers engraved on the syringes can help you identify the correct syringe. Since Carly does not make up her mind, Ryan rams all the syringes down her throat, which stops the mechanism, but leads to severe burns in Carly and her death. After Carly's death, it turns out that the antidote was marked with the number 3.53 - the amount she captured in the attack on the asthmatic woman. With the numbers on the remaining syringes, the survivors manage to open the next room.

During the Games, Halloran and his partner Detective Hunt begin investigating the matter - especially after the bodies are discovered in public places that appear to be the Unknown Man and Carly. The question of whether "Jigsaw" John Kramer really died ten years ago is widespread. Halloran suspects coroners Logan and Eleanor. Logan, whose wife was killed two years earlier, is suspicious of Halloran's motives. Edgar Munsen is kidnapped from the hospital by a stranger. When the police chief exhumed John Kramer's grave to reassure the public, Munsen's body was found in the coffin.

In the barn, Ryan tries to escape, the ground under his leg gives way, which is tied up by wires. Group members Anna and Mitch discover a door that leads into a grain silo and are trapped inside. A message states that Anna and Mitch will be buried in the silo unless Ryan pulls a lever that will free him from the wires around his leg. Ryan overcomes himself, pulling the lever instantly severing his leg, and saves Anna and Mitch.

Mitch will be tested next. A recorded message reveals that he knowingly sold a motorcycle with a broken brake to John Kramer's nephew, who died in a traffic accident. Mitch is lowered upside down into a spiral blade trap that can only be stopped by pulling a brake lever on the floor. Mitch gets caught in the trap and is torn apart by rotating blades.

Logan and Eleanor meanwhile talk about their distrust of Halloran in a bar before Eleanor brings Logan to her "studio", which shows that she is a big fan of the jigsaw killer and has built replicas of his previous traps. She worries that this will burden her. Detective Hunt followed them and took photos of the studio that he showed Halloran. Halloran then orders the arrest of the two. When Hunt tries to arrest his colleague Logan, he convinces him that Halloran is behind the "games" because he worked with Munsen in the past.

Logan and Eleanor drive to the barn after using pathological skills to deduce its location. Halloran manages to pursue them. The barn turns out to be an abandoned pig farm that once belonged to Jigsaw's widow's grandfather, Jill Tuck.

Anna tries to escape through a door and is drugged by a masked man. She wakes up with the badly injured Ryan, chained in a room with a third person who is not tied up. This is John Kramer - it's the key scene where it becomes clear that Anna and Ryan's story took place ten years in the past. John reveals that Anna, an old neighbor of his, suffocated her baby in a tantrum and accused her husband of placing the child's body next to him while he slept. This assumed to have rolled over the baby in his sleep. Her husband later committed suicide in a psychiatric hospital out of guilt. John explains that the two of them didn't deserve to survive and that they should think "backwards". He places a shotgun between them and explains that the cartridge is key to their survival. Anna misreads this message and tries to shoot Ryan. She is shot herself in the process; the weapon fired the shot "backwards". Ryan notices that the key to her chains was hidden in the cartridge and was destroyed when Anna pulled the trigger, leaving him trapped.

In the present, Logan and Eleanor begin to examine the barn and are ambushed by Halloran. Eleanor escapes while Logan is knocked out and Halloran is attacked by a stranger. Logan and Halloran wake up wearing collars with laser cutters. The two are told to confess their sins or their heads would be severed by the lasers. You have a choice of who wants to start. Halloran forces Logan to begin. Logan, a former doctor, admits he made a mistake and mislabeled John Kramer's x-rays. This led to a late diagnosis of cancer. Despite his confession, the lasers go over his head. Supposedly dead, he falls to the ground. Halloran admits that he has allowed criminals and murderers to escape punishment for personal gain, despite being a man of the law.

Suddenly Logan stands up and reveals that he was only faking his death to get Halloran to confess and record it on a recording device. Logan explains that he was the unknown man who appeared to die in the first game ten years ago. Kramer decided that Logan shouldn't die of a careless mistake. John accepted Logan as his first student. Flashback shows that it was Logan who designed the inverted bear trap in which Jigsaw's assistant Amanda Young was tested. Whether Jigsaw's other aides Mark Hoffman and Lawrence Gordon knew of Logan remains open. The bodies that were found were in fact the bodies of criminals that Halloran let go and who had to undergo the same tests that Logan was supposed to face ten years ago. His confession would now make Halloran a jigsaw killer, while Eleanor would provide Logan's alibi. Logan reveals that Munsen, whom Halloran ran, was responsible for the murder of Logan's wife.

Since Halloran refused to confess his sins and selfishly broke the rules and forced Logan to begin the test, he would now die. Logan tells Halloran that he is "speaking for the dead," and activates the lasers around his neck. Logan closes the door while Halloran's head is sliced by the lasers, leaving the body in the barn.

background

development

Saw 3D Completion was slated to be the final film in the franchise, which was originally conceived as a two-parter. However, Lionsgate only approved one more film after Saw VI's box office numbers. Due to this change, the content had to be shortened. The unveiling of Dr. Gordon as a Jigsaw accomplice came up short and generated more questions than she answered questions, according to the screenwriters of the seventh part, Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton . However, there are still several ideas for the future of the franchise. Composer Charlie Clouser describes the film as a reinvention of the franchise. The Spierig brothers could develop a new story around the Jigsaw story and use new characters to bring the saga into the future.

In February 2016 it was reported that Stolberg and Goldfinger were working on a draft for a new Saw film. In June 2016 it was announced that Michael and Peter Spierig would be directing the film.
