Career
Thomson spent his junior years between 1982 and 1985 with the Toronto Marlboros in the Ontario Hockey League . There he was used as a power forward due to his stature and already collected over 50 scorer points in his second full year of play . Previously, the striker in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft was selected in the ninth round in 185th position by the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League .
After Thomson had made his debut in the American Hockey League at the end of the 1984/85 season in the professional field for Washington's farm team , the Binghamton Whalers , he was in the team's squad from the following season until the summer of 1988. Meanwhile used as an enforcer , the Canadian also celebrated his debut in the NHL for the Capitals during the 1986/87 season . There he only played again in the 1988/89 season , in which he also ran up for Washington's new cooperation partner, the Baltimore Skipjacks . In the course of the game year Thomson was transferred to the Hartford Whalers in March 1989 in exchange for Scot Kleinendorst . His jersey he wore only five times during the rest of the season, however, as it was given to the farm team Binghamton Whalers at the beginning of the 1989/90 season and then given to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Chris Cichocki at the end of October .
Even in New Jersey, Thomson could not earn a regular place in the NHL and only ran for the same six times. Instead, he continued to play mainly in the AHL with the Utica Devils . His expiring contract was not renewed at the end of the 1989/90 season, and so the 25-year-old joined the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent in the summer of 1990 . In his first year in Los Angeles, the attacker also failed to establish himself in the NHL and thus ran for the New Haven Nighthawks . It was not until the 1991/92 season that he was increasingly in action in Los Angeles and played 45 games in that game year. In order to bind Thomson to them, they had him back in June 1991 together with Randy Gilhen , Charlie Huddy and a four-round vote in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft from the Minnesota North Stars in exchange for Todd Elik after Minnesota had him in the 1991 NHL Expansion Draft had chosen.
Despite this personal success, Thomson did not initially stay in Southern California. In the 1992 NHL Expansion Draft , the striker was selected this time by the Ottawa Senators and completed the beginning of the 1992/93 season for the newly formed franchise before the Kings signed him a third time. With Marc Fortier he was exchanged for Bob Kudelski and Shawn McCosh in December 1992 . After he was finally selected in the NHL Expansion Draft in 1993 for the third year in a row - this time by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim - he played there for six more NHL appearances before ending his career in the summer of 1994 at the age of 29 explained.
After retiring, Thomson served as President of the Aurora Tigers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League between 2015 and 2018 , for which his son played during that time.
