In 1667 he went to Nuremberg to see the well-known theologian Johann Michael Dilherr .

From there he continued his journey to the University of Altdorf , the University of Tübingen , the University of Heidelberg and the University of Gießen , until he finally completed his theological studies with Sebastian Schmidt , Isaak Faust (1632–1702) and Balthasar at the University of Strasbourg Bebel intensified. Before the end of 1667, his father had called him back to Halle because of the imminent danger of war, but he then sent him on a trip to Lower Saxony to the University of Kiel with his brother Johann Christian Olearius . There he had heard the lectures of Paul Sperling (1605–1679) and Christian Kortholt the Elder . He continued his studies at the Dutch universities in Leiden , Utrecht , Franeker and Groningen .

Back in his homeland, Olearius completed a weekly sermon in Halle Cathedral under the eyes of Duke August von Sachsen-Weißenfels and was thus able to gain the prospect of a respectable theological position. At that time the superintendent in Sangerhausen offered itself , which had been completed shortly before by the death of the old superintendent. In Sangerhausen he therefore completed his trial sermon on November 12, 1671. However, he was instructed to acquire the doctoral hat to exercise the office. Together with three of his brothers , he received his doctorate in theology in Jena in 1674 . After thirteen years of service in Sangerhausen, his father and older brother Johannes Andreas Olearius died in quick succession . Since Duke Johann Adolf I of Saxony-Weißenfels wanted him to take up this post, he became court preacher, church councilor, consistorial assessor and general superintendent of the Principality of Querfurt in Weißenfels on July 18, 1685. In the office of the same bishop he was promoted to court preacher in 1690 and died after a short illness. In terms of works, he only published individual sermons, whereby only the birthday sermons for Duke Johann Adolph, which he gave from 1684 to 1689, are known.

Olearius was married twice. He had his first marriage in Halle Cathedral on October 28, 1672 with Justina Helena († March 9, 1703), daughter of the Halle councilor Johann Stützing.
