Johann Christian Olearius (born June 22, 1646 in Halle (Saale) ; † December 9, 1699 ibid) was a German Lutheran theologian .

Life

Johann Christian Olearius was the son of Johannes Olearius (1611–1684) . In 1666 he graduated from the University of Jena and in 1667 received his master's degree in philosophy. Following the customs of the time, he completed an educational trip. In the summer semester of 1667 you can find him at the University of Leipzig , in 1668 he was a student of Christian Kortholt the Elder at the University of Kiel , in 1670 he was with Balthasar Bebel at the University of Strasbourg and then also attended Dutch universities.

In Querfurt he was appointed pastor and superintendent . In addition, he acquired the degree of licentiate in theology in Jena in 1672 and obtained his doctorate in theology together with his brothers in Jena in 1674 . In 1681 he became pastor and superintendent at the market church Our Dear Women in Halle (Saale) as well as consistorial councilor and inspector of the hall circle .

At the end of the 17th century Olearius experienced emerging pietism in his jurisdiction, trying to even the Lutheran orthodoxy belong, between the party to August Hermann Francke to convey the Lutheran orthodoxy and the party. Apart from a few disputations , he wrote nothing more. He is also the poet of the hymn "O God you know how I always reflect on my bliss" , which found its way into the 1718 Merseburg hymn book.

Olearius was married twice. He had his first marriage in the Naumburg St. Wenceslas Church on August 27, 1672 with Regina Justina Wolff (born January 7, 1654 in Naumburg; † August 31, 1689 in Halle), the daughter of a council chamberlain and pharmacist. After her death, he remarried to Maria Elisabeth, the youngest daughter of Government Secretary Michael Ringhammer. 14 children are known from these marriages, seven sons and seven daughters.
