Johann Christian August von Boehler (born August 4, 1776 in Wesel , † November 28, 1857 in Brandenburg an der Havel ) was a Prussian major general and commandant of the Spandau fortress .

Life

He was the son of the Prussian lieutenant colonel and battalion commander in the infantry regiment "von Kunitzky" Johann Andreas Boehler (born June 11, 1749 - July 1805) and his wife Anna Maria, née Lonzieme (* 1751 - February 5, 1837). His parents did not get a marriage license until 1789.

Military career

Boehler attended school in Wesel and entered the Prussian Army's "von Gaudi" infantry regiment on August 4, 1780 as a corporal . There he was appointed ensign on January 2, 1794 . In the First Coalition War , Boehler fought in the Battle of Kaiserslautern and the battles near St. Amand, St. Imbert, Hasnon, Schorleberg, Schwalm, Deidesheim , Pfennigen, Alseborn, Saarbrücken and Famars . In the meantime, he was promoted to second lieutenant on April 1, 1795, and from 1798 to 1806 Boehler served as a battalion adjutant. During the Fourth Coalition War , with the capitulation of the Hameln Fortress on October 23, 1806, he was taken prisoner of war , from which he was released on November 22, 1806 on his word of honor .

After the Treaty of Tilsit , Boehler was assigned to the Feldjäger regiment on foot on December 12, 1807 and promoted to Prime Lieutenant on October 17, 1808 with a patent from October 24, 1808 . On January 8, 1809 he came to the Guard Jäger Battalion and from there on April 29, 1809 to the East Prussian Jäger Battalion . Boehler was appointed adjutant to Lieutenant Colonel von Witzleben on May 30, 1809 with full salary and a ration , came to the adjutant's office as staff captain on February 2, 1810 and was promoted to captain on March 30, 1812 .

During the Wars of Liberation Boehler fought in the battles near Großbeeren , Bautzen , Dresden , Kulm , Leipzig and Ligny . For Großgörschen he received the Iron Cross 2nd class. Boehler was wounded in the foot near Leipzig and awarded the Iron Cross First Class. During the fighting at Ligny he was wounded twice and awarded for his achievements on March 17, 1815 with the Order of St. Vladimir and on October 2, 1815 with the Order Pour le Mérite . At that time he became major on August 16, 1813 and on October 3, 1815, with a patent from October 29, 1815, lieutenant colonel. On October 6, 1815, Boehler came as an adjutant to Major General von Jagow , before joining the Rhenish Rifle Battalion as a commander on January 5, 1816. Due to the wounds he suffered at Ligny, Boehler was no longer fit for field service. Therefore, on February 5, 1817, he was transferred to the Spandau Fortress as commandant. In this capacity he was promoted to colonel on March 30, 1823 with a patent from April 7, 1823 . On August 18, 1825, he received the service cross . On August 29, 1829 he took his leave as major general with an annual pension of 1750 thalers.

On August 22, 1845, Boehler became senior of the Iron Cross, 2nd class. It died on November 28, 1857 in Brandenburg an der Havel.

General von Zieten wrote on September 3, 1815: “Major General von Jagow made a particularly favorable statement about the conduct of Major von Boehler on June 16 at Ligny. He bravely pressed on to all attacks until he was so badly wounded that he has not yet returned.
