Christoph Demantius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann (es) Christoph Demantius (also Christophorus Demant (h) and Demuth) (born December 15, 1567 in Reichenberg , Bohemia ; † April 20, 1643 in Freiberg / Saxony ) was a German composer , music theorist and poet .

Life

Little is known about the childhood of Christoph Demantius. He seems to have grown up with music from a very early age and loved it. He probably attended the Latin school in Reichenberg. Around 1592 he calls himself a teacher at the St. Lorenz Pedagogy. According to Eitner, this could have been in Bautzen. He studied at the University of Wittenberg from February 17, 1593 . A longer stay in Leipzig is documented for 1594/95. In 1597 he became cantor in Zittau in Upper Lusatia . In 1604 he was appointed cantor at Freiberg Cathedral and the Cathedral School in Freiberg. In 1610 he bought a house in the cathedral district and in 1611 received citizenship . He worked in the cathedral chapel until his death in 1643.

Works (selection)

Demantius composed ecclesiastical and secular works in equal parts. Outstanding is his St. John Passion for 6 a cappella voices, which brings the musical form of the Choral Passion to one of its last blossoms.
