Johann Christoph von Düring , baron since 1719 , count since 1752 , ( Swedish Johan Christoffer Friherre och Greve von Düring ; born July 22, 1695 in Horneburg , † January 5, 1759 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish field marshal .

Life

Origin and family

Johann Christoph was a member of the Horneburg line of the Lower Saxon noble family von Düring . His parents were the Holstein colonel Johann Christoph von Düring (1658–1697) and Anna Sabina Freiin von Grothusen (1665–1718). His brother Otto Fredrik (1694–1715) was the companion of the Swedish King Charles XII. on his ride from Piteşti to Stralsund .

Düring married Catharina Margareta Countess Bonde af Björnö (1697–1755) in 1720 . The marriage resulted in three daughters, including Gustava Sabina (1721–1778), wife of the Swedish Imperial Council and diplomat Count Carl Fredrik Scheffer (1715–1786) since 1757 .

Career

Düring began his career in 1703 as a cornet with the Holstein Dragoons under General Bauditz in the War of the Spanish Succession in the Netherlands . Here he took part in the battle of Malplaquet , among other things . In 1710 he was promoted to captain in the Holstein regiment of Lieutenant General Banér.

As a lieutenant in 1714, he joined O. v. Vietinghoff, and thus in Swedish services . In 1715 he rose to the rank of colonel in the regiment after he had distinguished himself during the siege of Stralsund and in 1717 received his own German dragoon regiment. Düring was raised to the Swedish baron class in 1719 and introduced to the baron class of the Swedish knighthood in 1720 (No. 171).

In 1721 he was with the cavalry regiment in Skåne , where he became commander in 1727 . Düring was promoted to major general in 1730 and lieutenant general in 1740. He was sent to Russia as an unofficial envoy in 1743 . In 1748 he received the Commander's Cross 1st Class of the Order of the Sword and then the Order of Seraphine . After he was promoted to field marshal in 1751, he was raised to the status of Swedish count in the same year. He concluded his tour as governor of Stockholm, a position he had held since 1753.

He was hereditary lord on Tyresö and was buried in the church there.
