Johann "Hans" Friedrich von Katte (born March 9, 1698 ; † March 29, 1764 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and chief of the 3rd body cuirassier regiment .

Life

Johann Friedrich was the son of Heinrich Christoph von Katte (born April 26, 1675; † November 21, 1743) and his wife Ursula Dorothea von Möllendorff (* December 8, 1678; † July 28, 1747). His father was Lord of Kamern and Scharlibbe , Archbishop of Magdeburg Chamber President, Privy Council , Governor of Calbe and Knight of the Order De la Générosité . The mother was the daughter of Johann Friedrich von Möllendorf and Berta Katharina von Bismark from the Schönhausen family. His uncle was Field Marshal Hans Heinrich von Katte . The Prussian War Minister Heinrich Christoph von Katte (1699–1760), the Prussian generals Bernhard Christian von Katte (1700–1778), Karl Aemilius von Katte (1706–1757) and the major and regiment chief August von Katte (1711–1779) were his Brothers.

Military career

Katte was recruited for his cuirassier regiment No. 9 by his uncle . There he became lieutenant on September 25, 1717, Rittmeister in 1730 and major on October 3, 1730 . It lasted until July 31, 1739 when he was promoted to lieutenant colonel , on May 14, 1743 he was promoted to colonel . In the First Silesian War he was able to distinguish himself in the battles of Hohenfriedberg , Soor and Kesselsdorf .

In April 1747 he received the rank of major general with a patent dated December 2, 1743. In September 1747 he was appointed chief of the 3rd body cuirassier regiment. On May 22, 1756 he was promoted to lieutenant general. In the same year he fought in the Battle of Lobositz . The following year he was used in the Battle of Prague and the Battle of Kolin . Then the regiment moved to Lausitz . In the Battle of Wroclaw he was able to distinguish himself again and became interim commander of the city after the battle. Then General Lestwitz was to take over the city. In the meantime, however, the Austrians had enclosed the city and Katte negotiated the surrender, Lestwitz had no choice but to agree to the negotiated conditions. For this, both were brought to court martial. Katte was sentenced to one year and Lestwitz to two years in prison, and both were released from the army by the king. Katte died in Berlin in 1764 and was buried in the family crypt in Wust.

He was married to Henriette Katharina Truchsess von Waldburg (born September 13, 1714, † December 3, 1791) - chief stewardess in Stuttgart - since April 7, 1738. The couple had a son and a daughter. His son Friedrich Heinrich (1740-1813) became a Prussian lieutenant general.
