Johann Gustav Gildemeister (born July 20, 1812 on the Hofgut Klein-Siemen (today Kröpelin ), Duchy of Mecklenburg ; † March 11, 1890 in Bonn ) was a German orientalist .

Life

Johann Gildemeister visited the school in Bremen and was designed by Friedrich Adolph Krummenacher in Hebrew taught. From 1832 he studied theology and oriental languages ​​with August Wilhelm von Schlegel , Christian Lassen and Georg Wilhelm Freytag in Göttingen with Heinrich von Ewald and from 1834 to 1836 at the University of Bonn . He then lived in Leiden and Paris for a year to use the manuscript libraries there. Gildemeister received his doctorate on September 8, 1838 in Bonn. He taught as a private lecturer in Bonn from 1839 and was an associate professor for oriental languages ​​there from 1844. Appointed professor of theology and oriental literature at the University of Marburg since 1845, and librarian there in 1848. In 1859 he was called back to Bonn as a full professor of oriental, especially Semitic, languages. He was a member of the German Oriental Society and the German Association for the Exploration of Palestine . In the fall of 1889 his deteriorating health forced him to stop teaching. One of his important students at that time was Eugen Prym .

In 1840/41 he was friends with Bruno Bauer . In 1852 he married his cousin Johanna Gildemeister .

A part of his handwritten estate is being kept at the Philipps University of Marburg . The University and State Library of Saxony-Anhalt Library of the German Oriental Society preserves part of his personal library.
