Johann Huber (clergyman)

Johann Huber , actually Johannes Laurentius Huber , (born May 17, 1812 in Hägglingen , also entitled to residency there ; † August 16, 1879 in Rigi Klösterli ) was the last provost and cathedral capitular at St. Verena Minster in Bad Zurzach .

Life

Johann Huber came from a Christian family, his father is said to have regained his sight through intercession in Einsiedeln after going blind in his youth and, according to a vow, made an annual pilgrimage to Einsiedeln until he was old. His son Johann attended a private spiritual school in his home town of Hägglingen from 1825 to 1827 , and from 1827 to 1831 the grammar school in Baden AG and from 1831 to 1833 attended the Lyceum in Lucerne, among others with Joseph Eutych Kopp (with whom he also kept in contact later) . He studied from November 1833 at the Catholic theological faculty in Tübingen , and from December 1835 in Besançon at the archbishop's seminary . On December 26, 1836, he was ordained a priest by Bishop Joseph Anton Salzmann in Solothurn . He then worked as a chaplain in Mellingen and at the same time as a religion teacher at the teachers' seminar in Lenzburg (January 1837 - April 1838). He became pastor in Ehrendingen (May 10, 1838 - December 14, 1842) and then pastor in Lengnau (December 18, 1842 - January 8, 1856), at the same time dean of the Regensberg Chapter (1848-1856). He was also dean and pastor in Zurzach (January 13, 1856 - April 17, 1864). On January 15, 1864, he was elected as Stifts propst and on April 17, 1864 as a non-resident canon of the Bishopric of Basel on the triple proposal of the government council of Bishop Eugenius Lachat on March 11, 1868 and on April 16 of the same year by the cathedral chapter of the Basel diocese invested in the Episcopal Cathedral of Solothurn. He was still a witness to the abolition of the 600-year-old St. Verenastift in Zurzach by the Grand Council on May 17, 1876. He was the last of 37 monasteries and died resigned in Rigi Klösterli.
