Johann Karl Jakob von Mutius (born July 26, 1758 in Börnchen ; † May 16, 1816 there ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Johann Karl Jakob was the son of the Privy Councilor of Justice and Chancellor of the Cathedral of Wroclaw Franz Joseph von Mutius (1704–1788) and his wife Maria Viktoria, née von Rava (1722–1769).

Military career

Mutius attended the Silesian Knight Academy in Liegnitz and in 1773 was employed as a junior in the cuirassier regiment "von Roeder" of the Prussian army . He took part in the War of the Bavarian Succession in 1778/79 and in the fight against the Kościuszko uprising in 1794 , after which he retired from military service in the same year as Rittmeister and squadron chief in the hussar regiment "von Lediwary" .

In 1801 Mutius re-entered and in 1807 was a staff officer of the Dragoon Regiment "von Rouquette" No. 13, which belonged to the garrison of Danzig . Even before the siege began, he had acquired the order Pour le Mérite in a battle near Marienwerder . He took over command of the Krockow Freikorps , as its commander he was taken prisoner of war . Mutius left the army in 1810 to re-enter as early as 1813 at the beginning of the wars of freedom and commanded a dragoon brigade. He fought at Groß-Görschen , Bautzen and Haynau , where he led the rearguard of the Silesian Army under Blücher .

When the autumn campaign of 1813 began after the armistice had expired, he was given command of a Landwehr brigade in the Kleist Corps reserve cavalry . In the battle of Kulm he ordered an attack on French infantry, which failed. The troops could not meet his requirements in the difficult mountainous terrain, for which he was later criticized. For the successful participation of his brigade in the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig , he received the Iron Cross 1st class. While the II. Prussian Army Corps blocked the city of Erfurt with its Petersberg citadel after the battle , Mutius stayed in Leipzig and fell seriously ill with typhus . Although he later followed the army to France, considering his poor health, he said goodbye immediately after the peace agreement and died in Börnchen in 1816.

family

Mutius was married to Charlotte Friederike, nee Freiin von Lützow (* December 23, 1758, † September 3, 1811) since October 13, 1788 . The couple had three children:
