Johann Wenzel Kosch (Czech. Jan Václav Kosch ) (born June 28, 1718 in Männelsdorf near Atschau (Zvoníčkov near Úhošťany ); † April 18, 1798 in Tetschen ) was a German-Bohemian builder and architect of the late Baroque who served the Counts of Thun -Hohenstein in Děčín in northern Bohemia . His churches and other buildings are in the tradition of Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer . His work was mainly concentrated in the region around Děčín (Tetschen).

Live and act

Johann Wenzel Kosch, like his two colleagues of the same name, related to him, Johann Christoph Kosch (1698–1778) and Johann Christoph Kosch (1703–1784), came from a family of builders. He was born the son of the judge Andreas Kosch (1678–1761) and his wife Regina in Männelsdorf (Zvoníčkov) and was baptized on June 28, 1718 in the church of St. Gallus in Atschau (Úhošťany), now OT von Kadaň . It is not known where he trained as a bricklayer and where he passed the master craftsman examination. He went from Klösterle to Tetschen as a servant of the Counts of Thun. There he married Anna Franziska Honneter († 1771) in 1748, with whom he had three children. When his wife died, his son Vincent became a citizen of the city of Tetschen. Little is known about his subsequent life. He died on April 18, 1798 during construction work on Tetschen Castle after falling from a wall. His employers were:

  • Jan Josef Franz Anton von Thun and Hohenstein (1711–1788) and his son
  • Wenzel Josef Johann Graf von Thun and Hohenstein (1737–1796) - founder of the Tetschen line.

In the 1750s he was involved in the renovation of the Church of St. Wenceslas and Blasius in Tetschen. Here he realized his idea of a church facade with only one tower. When the parish church in Arnsdorf (Arnoltice) was built in 1757/58, Kosch was able to realize his own plans for the first time. In the years 1764–1769 he led the second construction phase of the parish church of St. Wenceslas in Rosawitz (Rozbělesy) and changed the original project by KI Dientzenhofer. The construction of the deanery church of St. Peter and Paul in Auscha (Úštěk) 1764–1772 is attributed to JW Kosch. Various church buildings followed in Srbské Kamenice, Varnsdorf, Kytlice, Prácheň and Volfartice, located in today's Okres Děčín and Okres Česká Lípa . At the end of 1783 he was in charge of building supervision at the so-called Kaisertor to commemorate Josef II's visit to Tetschen in 1779, which was torn down again in 1830. From 1786 until his death he was involved in the renovation of Tetschen Castle (until 1790 as construction manager). Because of its architectural features, Kosch is also considered the builder of the Church of St. John the Baptist in Habartice.
