Johann Wilhelm Adolf Franz von Uthmann (born February 2, 1824 in Schneidlingen , † January 9, 1897 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian major general .

Johann was a member of the Silesian noble family von Uthmann and a son of the Prussian major general Erdmann von Uthmann (1790–1861) and his wife Karoline Adelaide, née Rabe (1799–1857).

Military career

Uthmann attended high schools in Minden and Kolberg . On October 8, 1842, he joined the 29th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a fusilier . With the promotion to secondary lieutenant he was aggregated to the 3rd engineer inspection at the beginning of November 1843 and commanded to the United Artillery and Engineering School until the end of June 1845 . Uthmann was then assigned to the 7th Pioneer Department and the 2nd Reserve Pioneer Department in Mainz , before he was assigned to the 3rd engineer inspection at the end of March 1848. For half a year he served at the fortification in Glatz and came in mid-April 1851 for the second engineer inspection. There Uthmann was promoted to prime lieutenant on December 2, 1852 , spent one and a half months at the Königsberg fortification and was transferred to the first engineer inspection on March 1, 1853. As a captain , Uthmann was chief of the 2nd Company of the Guards Pioneer Department from June 27, 1857 . At the same time he acted from July 1863 as a member of the examination committee for captains and prime lieutenants of the engineering corps . On December 1, 1863, Uthmann was appointed adjutant to the 1st Engineer Inspection.

During the German War in 1866 he was commanded to carry out fortification work in and near Dresden before Uthmann took part in the campaign in southern Germany as 2nd engineer officer with the II Reserve Army Corps. After the end of the war he was promoted to Major Commander of the Lower Silesian Pioneer Battalion No. 5 in Glogau on October 20, 1866 . From January 14, 1868 to January 3, 1870 he was the commander of the Kurhessian Pioneer Battalion No. 11 and then an engineer officer from the square in Mainz. In this capacity, Uthmann was responsible for the reinforcement of the Mainz fortress in 1870/71 during the war against France . On the occasion of the imperial proclamation he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 18, 1871 . On March 22, 1873 Uthmann received the character of a colonel . On May 13, 1873, he was appointed inspector of the 4th fortress inspection and was granted the patent for this rank . In addition, from June 10, 1873, he was initially a member and later until his departure from the President of the examination committee of the engineering corps. After two years as the inspector of the 1st engineer inspection, Uthmann was appointed inspector of the 1st engineer inspection on April 13, 1878, and five days later he was promoted to major general. In this position, in mid-September 1879, he was awarded the Red Eagle Order II. Class with Oak Leaves, and on June 24, 1880, Uthmann became a legal knight of the Order of St. John . On October 14, 1880, he was put up for disposal with the statutory pension .
