Johannes Lebek (born January 21, 1901 in Zeitz ; died October 8, 1985 in Adelebsen ) was a German wood cutter , graphic artist and book illustrator .

Life

Johannes Lebek was born on January 21, 1901 as the son of a mine worker in Zeitz. After his father's death, he lived in an orphanage in Torgau from 1911 to 1915 . From 1915 to 1917 he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter in Birnbaum an der Warthe . He then worked in the wood industry in his hometown.

From 1920 to 1922 he took drawing and painting lessons from Anton Klamroth (1860–1929) in Leipzig . In 1926 he became a member of the Ostthüringer Künstlerbund and took part in an art exhibition for the first time. From 1931 to 1934 he studied at the Academy of Graphic Arts and Printing Arts Leipzig and was a master student at wood carver and illustrator Hans Alexander Müller (1888-1962). It was here that the first publications were made in the academy's workshops: the portfolio “Streets and Bridges” and the block books “The Apprentice”, “Elisabethchen” and “The Spring Stones”. In 1934 Lebek finished his studies because of the changed situation at the academy after the National Socialists came to power .

Between 1934 and 1939 he took part in so-called emergency work. During this time he created the cycles “Pomeranian Landscapes” and “Knapsackbilder” (brown coal works near Cologne). From 1939 to 1944 he worked as a technical draftsman at Junkers Aircraft and Engine Works in Dessau . In 1945 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and was an American prisoner of war in France from 1945 to 1946 . From 1946 he worked as a freelance artist in Zeitz.

From 1954 to 1958 he was a lecturer in nature studies and head of the woodcut workshop at the Leipzig University of Graphics and Book Art . In 1953 he became a founding member of the international woodcutter association XYLON , of which Frans Masereel was president . In 1958 he was dismissed from the Leipzig University for political reasons. Lebek's works were no longer included in central art exhibitions. Only Christian publishers published his work.

In 1969 he moved to Adelebsen near Göttingen . From 1971 to 1982 he designed "Memories" which were published as a supplement in the art magazine "Illustration 63". He died on October 8, 1985 in Adelebsen. Works by Johannes Lebek are kept in the museum's own collection in the gatehouse of Moritzburg Castle in Zeitz. A significant part of the collection was given to the museum as a deposit by the artist's heirs. In 2001, Moritzburg Castle , the Johannes Lebek Art and Museum Education Center was established in Zeitz.
