John Albert (born January 19, 1989 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American ice hockey player who was last under contract with the Grizzlys Wolfsburg in the German Ice Hockey League .
Career
Albert first played between 2004 and 2005 in his hometown for the junior team of the Cleveland Barons in the North American Hockey League . He then moved to the US National Team Development Program of the US Ice Hockey Association USA Hockey for two years and ran for their U17 and U18 teams in the United States Hockey League and North American Hockey League. In the summer of 2007 he was then selected in the sixth round of the NHL Entry Draft 2007 in 175th place by the Atlanta Thrashers from the National Hockey League .
The attacker initially pursued a four-year course at Ohio State University , for whose ice hockey team he played in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . For the 2011/12 season Albert finally switched to the professional camp and signed a contract with the Winnipeg Jets , which had succeeded the Atlanta Thrashers in the NHL. For the Jets' farm team , the St. John's IceCaps , the center played in the American Hockey League for the next four years . The only exception was nine NHL games in the 2013-14 season in which he scored a goal. After spending the 2015/16 season with the Manitoba Moose in the AHL, Albert moved to Finland in the summer of 2016 , where he signed a contract with Oulun Kärpät from the Liiga .
After a year in Finland, Albert returned to the NHL in July 2017 when he signed a one-year deal with the Washington Capitals . However, the attacker gave them to the New York Rangers together with Hubert Labrie in February 2018 and received Joe Whitney and Adam Chapie in return . After he was also used exclusively in the AHL by the Rangers, Albert decided to move to Europe again in July 2018 and signed a one-year contract with the Grizzlys Wolfsburg in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). There he seriously injured his foot in the preparation for the season in September 2018 when he fell into the gang for training and was out for the entire game year.
International
Albert took part in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2006 and the U18 Junior World Championship in 2007 for his home country . The striker won the silver medal in both competitions.
