John Danforth
John Claggett Danforth (* 5. September 1936 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American priest of the Episcopal Church , a lawyer and politician .
After studying law at Yale and Princeton Universities , Danforth was Attorney General of Missouri in 1969 . From 1976 to 1995 he was elected three times for the state in the US Senate , where he chaired the Committee on Economics, Science and Transportation. Among other things, he prevailed in the re-election in 1988 against the later governor of Missouri, Jay Nixon , with a share of the vote of 68 percent. In 1994 he was no longer a candidate; he was succeeded by John Ashcroft .
In 2000, the Republican was at times considered George W. Bush's possible candidate for the office of Vice President . Before his appointment as UN Ambassador to the USA in 2004, he was, among other things, the US special envoy to Sudan , where he brought the government and the South Sudanese rebel group Sudanese People's Liberation Movement / Army ( SPLM / A ) to the negotiating table. After only a short term in office, Danforth resigned on January 20, 2005.
John Danforth is married with five grown children.
