John Hargreaves (born December 2, 1945 ) is a retired English snooker player who was a professional player for nine years between 1983 and 1992.

Career

Beginnings as an amateur

Originally from Stoke-on-Trent , Hargreaves first attracted attention in 1971 when he lost to Chris Ross in the southern qualifying competition of the English Amateur Championship in the round of 16 . Three years later he defeated Jack Fitzmaurice , among others , before he had to admit defeat to Patsy Fagan in the semifinals . After losing to Vic Harris in the quarterfinals the following year , he did not take part in the tournament in 1976 and instead reached the second round of the Pontins Spring Open with a victory over Terry Griffiths . In 1978 Hargreaves finally reached the semi-finals of the qualification for the English Amateur Championship and was defeated there by the later English champion Terry Griffiths, before he reached the round of 16 with a victory over Cliff Thorburn at the Pontins Spring Open and was defeated there by Steve Davis .

After Hargreaves was eliminated in the eighth finals in the northern qualifying competition of the English Amateur Championship in 1980, he won the Pontins Spring Open a year later after a white wash over Terry Griffiths - now world champion on a professional level - with a 7-3 victory over Cliff Wilson . In 1983 he reached the second round of the northern qualifying competition of the English championship again before he became a professional player that same year.

Smaller successes on the professional tour

With the start of his professional career in the 1983/84 season , Hargreaves had chosen a period in which, in addition to the snooker world championship , other tournaments were gradually elevated to the status of a ranking tournament. Nevertheless, he started the season with two opening defeats at the Professional Players Tournament and at the UK Championship against Mario Morra and Ian Williamson . He then reached the round of the last 48 at the Classic with wins over Warren King and Billy Kelly and lost there to Mark Wildman , this result being Hargreaves' best result in a ranking tournament. After participating in the qualifying group phase of the International Masters , he ended the season with a 5-10 loss to Eddie McLaughlin in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship . Nevertheless, Hargreaves did not manage to place himself on the world rankings, so he remained unset.

In the following season , Hargreaves lost a total of four opening games, in two of which he reached the decision frame , but in return also lost one through a white wash . In the other tournaments he reached the round of 80 at the International Open with a win over Pat Houlihan , at the UK Championship with a win over Paul Medati and at the Classic with a win over Mike Darrington , in which he beat Billy Kelly , Matt Gibson and Ray Edmonds lost. This resulted in Hargreaves' first world ranking at 102nd.

Also in the 1985/86 season Hargreaves lost again four opening games, this time neither reaching a decision frame nor losing through a white wash. Apart from that, he reached the round of 96 at the Grand Prix with a win over Graham Cripsey and at the UK Championship with a win over Derek Mienie, losing to Steve Longworth and Jim Meadowcroft respectively . He also benefited from Gerry Watson's non-fighting retirement at the British Open and defeated Ray Edmonds himself before losing to Neal Foulds in the round of 64 . As a result, he was able to improve by ten places on the world rankings, with this 92nd place remaining Hargreaves' highest world ranking.

Last professional years

With the 1986/87 season , the number of opening defeats rose to five out of seven possible games. In the other two tournaments, Hargreaves survived the opening game at the UK Championship on the one hand through the absence of a fight from Leon Heywood before he lost 9-0 to Wayne Jones , and on the other hand at the British Open with a 5-4 win over Maurice Parkin , before he was eliminated there by means of a 3-5 defeat by John Rea . On the world rankings, Hargreaves slipped back below the 100 mark and was ranked 104 the following season.

In the 1987/88 season Hargreaves lost at the beginning of the International Open 4-5 against the Canadian Mario Morra and started the season again with an opening defeat. But even if he had registered for five more tournaments, Hargreaves gave up all other games in advance without a fight. In fact, this defeat against the Canadian Hargreaves' last professional game, as he continued to play professional in the following seasons, but did not play a single game. He slipped from 122nd place on the world rankings to 136th place, before losing his world rankings in 1990 and regaining rank 158 in 1991. Finally, Hargreaves officially ended his professional career in 1992 after fourteen seasons.
