John S. McCain, Jr.

John Sidney McCain, Jr. (born January 17, 1911 in Council Bluffs , Iowa , † March 22, 1981 over the North Atlantic ) was an American admiral in the US Navy , who served in World War II and most recently in the Vietnam War.

Life

His father was Admiral John S. McCain senior . His son, John S. McCain III (1936-2018), a former captain of the US Navy, was Senator of the State of Arizona , and was in the United States presidential election 2008 candidate of the Republicans .

McCain was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1931 and married Roberta Wright (* 1912) on January 21, 1933 . During Operation Torch during World War II, McCain commanded the USS Gunnel (SS-253). In the summer of 1945 McCain commanded the submarine USS Dentuda (SS-335) on its only patrol in the Pacific , for which the boat was awarded a battlestar .

From 1968 to 1972 he was Commander in Chief of the US Pacific Command and thus responsible for all US armed forces in the Pacific including those who fought in Vietnam. His son John S. McCain III was in North Vietnamese captivity in Hanoi from October 1967 to March 1973 .

He was retired on November 1, 1972. On January 27, 1973, the Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam was signed in Paris .

McCain died of a heart attack on March 22, 1981 in a military aircraft on a flight from Europe to the United States and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
