John White (born March 22, 1966 in Louisville , Kentucky ) is a retired American basketball player . White began a professional career after studying in his home country, initially playing in Venezuela , Austria and Cyprus . In 1996 he came to the British Basketball League (BBL), where he ended his active career in 2002 after playing in France and briefly in Lithuania . In 2010 he worked as a trainer in the " Minor League " UBA for the Southern Generals and then worked as a trainer in the "Global Basketball Summer League".

Career

To study White went to the University of Southern Mississippi in 1984 , where he played the NCAA for the college team Golden Eagles in the then Metro Conference , which later became part of the Conference USA . The Metro Conference was dominated by the Tigers from Memphis State University and the Cardinals from the University of Louisville , White's hometown, who made up seven of the eight finalists in the Metro Conference championship tournament during White's four-year college career. In 1986, however, the Golden Eagles received an invitation to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and thus also contested the " postseason ", where they were eliminated from the tournament with a first round defeat. The following year they were again represented at the NIT and were able to move into the final, which they won against the Explorers of LaSalle University by four points. White, who had spent a long time on the bench in the second half due to foul problems , was brought on again 15 seconds before the end and was able to convert the final two free throws to ensure victory. A year later, the defending champion at the NIT was eliminated in the second round. While his teammate Randolph Keys was selected in the NBA Draft in 1988 , White was not considered in the " Entry Draft " of the most prestigious professional league NBA .

After White had already played professionally in the Venezuelan Caracas after his studies, he came to ABC Merkur from Graz in the Austrian A-League season 1989/90 , which however could not place in the front of the league. In the summer of 1990 he played again in Caracas before he got a contract for the European season 1990/91 with Pezoporikos from Larnaka in the Republic of Cyprus . With this club he won the championship twice, after the unsuccessful title defense in 1993, he went to the Finnish Korisliiga for one season . For the A-League season 1994/95 he then returned to Austria, where he played for the club from Klosterneuburg . Here White drew attention to himself with individual best performances and scored 42 points against his former team from Graz and 48 points in the previous game against the other Graz team, but the Klosterneuburger only finished third from bottom of the table at the end of the season. For the 1995/96 season White then went back to Cyprus, where he played in Nicosia for ENAD, whose local rival APOEL was able to defend his championship title.

For the 1996/97 season White came to the British Basketball League (BBL), where he played for the Leopards franchise from London . This team fought bitter duels with their local rivals London Towers , with the Leopards prevailing in the semi-finals of the "National Cup" and finally winning the title, while the Towers had the upper hand in the quarter-finals of the BBL Trophy League Cup and were able to win the competition. The Leopards moved into the play-offs as the first in the main round with White as the “ Most Valuable Player ” (MVP) of the season, in which they were inferior to the second Towers in the final by just one point. In the following season you went again as the main round first with White's compatriot and teammate Eric Burks as MVP in the play-offs, but in which you lost the following two home games in the first round after the opening win at the Manchester Giants. In the 1998/99 season, White then played for the Giants from Manchester , who won the League Cup BBL Trophy. As second in the main round with White as the “ top scorer ” of the league with a little more than 26 points per game, the Giants were eliminated in the play-off semifinals. The Giants committed for the following season Tony Dorsey , who had three times before been top scorer in the league, and White got a contract in the French LNB Pro A .

In the 1999/2000 season White played for the French first division promoted Illkirch-Graffenstaden Basket from Strasbourg . White was again top scorer in the league with not quite 20 points per game and the team reached the play-off semifinals series as fifth in the main round, in which they were smoothly inferior to the main round first ASVEL in three games . In the 2000/01 season, White first played for the Lithuanian runner-up Žalgiris from Kaunas , including in the ULEB Euroleague 2000/01 . At the turn of the year, however, he was released from his contract and had short-term contracts for the rest of the season with Basket Comté Doubs from Besançon in the French second division and the French first division club SLUC from Nancy . For the 2001/02 season he returned to London, where he played for the Towers. The London Towers took part again in the ULEB Euroleague 2001/02 , which had now finally replaced the competitions of FIBA Europe as the highest European club competition. At this level, however, the Towers were overwhelmed and often lost all 14 preliminary round games quite significantly. In the championship they were eliminated in the semi-final play-offs of the BBL. White then ended his playing career. For players with more than 100 appearances within the BBL, White has the second-best point average with just under 24 points per game and has the best free-throw rate for players with more than 200 free-throw attempts. In the 2010/11 season he won the UBA championship with the Southern Generals as a coach.
