Jonathan Sternberg

Jonathan Sternberg (born July 27, 1919 in New York City , † May 8, 2018 in Philadelphia ) was an American conductor and music teacher .

The son of Austro-Russian parents had violin lessons at the Institute of Musical Art (later Juilliard School ) from 1929 to 1931 . He continued his education at the Manhattan School of Music , New York University and Harvard University (1939-40). As a conductor he was a student of Leon Barzin and Pierre Monteux . In 1941 he made his debut with the National Youth Administration Orchestra of New York in a performance of Aaron Copland's An Outdoor Ouverture , after which he began his military service.

After the end of the war he led the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra for one season , after which, after a short stay in the USA, he went to Vienna , where he conducted the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in 1947 . He then appeared as a guest conductor in Europe, America and the Far East. He worked closely with the Haydn researcher HC Robbins Landon . For his Haydn Society he recorded works by Joseph Haydn (Nelson Mass) as well as compositions by Mozart (Posthorn Serenade), Schubert's Second Symphony, Gioachino Rossini's Stabat mater , Sergei Prokofiev's Fifth Piano Concerto, Darius Milhaud's Fantaisie Pastorale and Charles Ives ' Set of Pieces .

In addition, he dedicated himself particularly to the presentation of works by contemporary American composers in Europe. As conductor of the RIAS Symphony Orchestra, he led the European premieres of Leonard Bernstein's Serenade , Gian Carlo Menotti's Violin Concerto and Charles Ives ' Second Symphony and conducted premieres of works by Samuel Barber , Aaron Coplands, David Diamonds and Benjamin Lees as well as with other orchestras the world premiere of Ned Rorem's First Symphony (1951) and László Lajthas Sixth (1961).

From 1957-58 Sternberg directed the Halifax Symphony Orchestra , from 1961 to 1966 he was musical director and chief conductor of the Koninklijke Vlaamse Opera Antwerp , after which he worked in the USA until 1968 for the ballet program of the Rebekah Harkness Foundation and from 1968-69 for the Atlanta Municipal Theater in the same function. As a guest conductor, he toured Europe with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg , performed Beethoven programs with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the Royal Albert Hall and directed the Orchester de la Suisse Romande in Geneva and symphony orchestras in Warsaw , Prague , Berlin , Munich , Stuttgart and Basel , Brussels and Monte Carlo.

From 1969 to 1971 Sternberg taught conducting as a visiting professor at the Eastman School of Music , then until 1989 at Temple University in Philadelphia. Here he also conducted world premieres of David Diamonds Music for Chamber Orchestra (1976), Vincent Persichetti's A Lincoln Address and Night Dances (1977) and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski's Ricercari notturni for three saxophones and orchestra (1978). From 1989 he taught at Chestnut Hill College . From 2004 to 2008 he was musical and artistic director of the Bach Festival of Philadelphia .

The numerous musicians who have appeared in concerts and operas under his direction include Isaac Stern , Yehudi Menuhin , Henryk Szeryng , Paul Badura-Skoda , Alfred Brendel , Annie Fischer , Philippe Entremont , Byron Janis , Teresa Stich-Randall , Lisa Della Casa , Hilde Güden , George London and Paul Schöffler . The Conductors Guild awarded him the Award for Lifetime Service in 2009 .
