Josef Ernst Köpplinger (born July 21, 1964 in Hainburg an der Donau ) is an Austrian director and artistic director of operas, operettas, musicals and drama.

Training and beginnings

After attending primary and secondary school in his hometown of Bruck an der Leitha and upper secondary school in Eisenstadt, he studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna , as well as in New York, London and Paris. In addition to his training as a pianist and actor with additional singing studies in Vienna, he was hired as the youngest director of Marietheres List in 1988 at the Regensburg Municipal Theaters . In the 1988/89 season he was director of the youth theater at the Regensburg Municipal Theaters.

Since 1990 he has been working internationally as a freelance director for operas, operettas, musicals and drama.

Stations

Directorships

From 1999 to 2003, Köpplinger was the artistic director of the Schloss Prugg musical festival in Lower Austria. From 2004 to 2007 Köpplinger was acting director at the Theater St. Gallen in Switzerland.

In 2007, Köpplinger was appointed artistic director of the Klagenfurt City Theater . He held this position from 2007 to 2012. There he initiated the MUT competition for musical entertainment theater in 2010. Köpplinger's artistic directorship also marked the 100th anniversary of the Landestheater Klagenfurt with the premiere of the previously lost Cherubini opera Koukourgi in the 2010/11 season, which was broadcast live by 3sat .

Josef Ernst Köpplinger has been State Director of the State Theater on Gärtnerplatz in Munich since the 2012/13 season . There, in addition to opera and operetta, he focuses as a premiere theater, e.g. B .: Friedrich Cerha's uncle President . Further world premieres under Köpplinger's artistic directorship were Marc Schubring's musical Hazardous Liaisons (2014/15 season), Johanna Doderer's opera Liliom (with Köpplinger's libretto, 2016/17 season) and the musical Pumuckl by Franz Wittenbrink (2017/18 season). In the 2017/18 season, the first season after the five-year general renovation of the house, which began in October 2017 with a reopening gala, Köpplinger was able to achieve a seat occupancy of 96%.
