The Josef lever GmbH & Co. KG is a German family of the construction industry from the Upper Swabia Memmingen .

history

The company was founded in 1919 as Hebel und del Mestre OHG and entered in the company register at the Memmingen district court. The focus of activity at that time was residential construction in the low-price segment based on our own designs. The first office building at that time was still the apartment of the company's founder, Josef Hebel . Canal construction work was also carried out back then. Josef Hebel took over the company in 1926 and was sole owner from then on. He put the main focus on industrial and government buildings. In reinforced concrete construction in particular, he developed into one of the leading providers in the Swabian-Bavarian region. A new plant in Emmering enabled the production of aerated concrete to start in 1943. From 1944, the Munich area could also be served thanks to a new branch in Munich and the Ravensburger area with a branch in Ravensburg .

In 1945, a process was developed in the factory that made it possible to cut the stable material. This is done by means of taut steel wires. This made the series production of large-format components possible. The aerated concrete division was subsequently spun off as Hebel AG, based in Emmering. The company subsequently grew into a major German building materials group; in the 1998/99 financial year the company achieved sales of around 900 million marks. The company employed around 3,100 people in 16 locations. Business fields were residential and commercial construction, project and plant construction as well as insulation systems. In addition, the company Hebel Haus , based in Alzenau, was part of the group until 2001 . In 2000, Hebel AG was sold to what was then Preussag and then integrated into Fels-Werke . The Fels-Werke were founded in 2001 by Franz Haniel & Cie. acquired, incorporated into the Xella group of companies , which continued to operate the lever brand in the commercial construction sector and lever house.

The construction division remained in family hands under the Josef Hebel company. In 2002, project development activity in the commercial real estate sector began. A hardware store in Memmingen's north industrial area was completed. The flood protection on the upper Iller initiated the expansion of civil engineering activities and the entry into hydraulic engineering and flood protection (2003). As a result of the ongoing lull in the German construction sector, several branches had to be closed between 2002 and 2004. The staff therefore fell during this period from around 600 employees (2002) to around 400 employees (2004). The company's turnover also fell from around 88 million euros (2000) to less than 60 million euros (2005). Despite the economic turbulence, the number of apprentices was kept constant at around 50. A new asphalt mixing plant in Tautenhofen started operations in 2006 . In 2006 new appointments could be made again, so that now around 450 employees can be counted again. In 2006 sales rose to 84 million euros. In the 2008 financial year, sales increased to over 100 million euros for the first time.
