Joaquim Manuel Welo Lupeta , called Jucie Lupeta (born March 24, 1993 in Lourinhã ) is a Portuguese football player of Congolese descent on the position of a striker . Since 2017 he has been under contract with NK Celje with games in the highest Slovenian football league .

Club career

Career start at home

The son of Congolese parents was born on March 24, 1993 in the Portuguese coastal town of Lourinhã and played at an early age for the amateur club SC Lourinhanense in its youth department. Here he went through various divisions before he joined the Portuguese top club FC Porto as a 13-year-old and was used for several years in the club's own youth. In 2010 he made the leap into the U-19 team of the club and from that time on he was also used in the Portuguese U-18 national team. During his time in the youth of the northern Portuguese, he was temporarily loaned from 2008 to 2009 to Padroense FC from the suburb of Senhora da Hora and was used in their youth teams. After his involvement with FC Porto expired in the summer of 2012, Lupeta was subsequently without a club for several months before joining Videoton FC in mid-May 2013, which played in the Nemzeti Bajnokság , the highest Hungarian football league. With the Hungarians, he initially signed a contract with a term of a few weeks until June 30, 2013, which, however, included the option of a contract extension.

Professional debut in Hungary

Just a few days after signing, he made his professional debut on May 18, 2013 in a 2-1 home win over Kaposvári Rákóczi FC under coach José Manuel Gomes , whom he knew from Porto times, from the 84th minute of the game to replace the veteran Sándor Torghelle . In the two subsequent championship games, the penultimate and last game of Nemzeti Bajnokság 2012/13 , Lupeta also came to two short appearances for the club from Székesfehérvár . Videoton FC finished the season as runner-up behind Győri ETO FC and was thus able to secure participation in the second qualifying round for the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League . The option in Lupeta's contract was also withdrawn and his contract was extended for another year until the end of the 2013/14 season. Subsequently, he came to other short assignments for the Hungarian club alongside various compatriots. He was not part of the professional squad for a large part of the season and was on the bench for the first time in the 15th championship round without being used. After that, months passed before he was present again as a reservist in March. Only from the 25th to the 30th round did the Portuguese regularly sit on the Hungarian bench. In a 1-0 away win over Honvéd Budapest on May 3, 2014, Lupeta came on a brief assignment when he was sent on the field by Gomes in the 89th minute for Arturo Alvarez . On June 1, 2014, the last game of the season, he was in the 1-1 home draw against Diósgyőri VTK from the 87th minute for Zsolt Haraszti in the game; this his only competitive games in the 2013/14 season , which the team finished in fourth place in the table.

Change back home

After his contract was not renewed, Lupeta returned to his native country, where he joined the first division side Vitória Setúbal and signed a two-year contract. There he came under the new coach Domingos Paciência , who replaced José Couceiro , who was released from his duties after the end of the 2013/14 season, from the first game of the season on. In the 2-0 defeat against Rio Ave FC , he came on the lawn from the 68th minute of play for Miguel Pedro . In the subsequent rounds of the game, he alternated between appearances, sat on the substitutes' bench without a mission or was not part of the professional squad at all. In his third championship appearance , a 2-0 home win over CD National , the center forward was used from the start on September 28, 2014 and scored 1-0 in the 20th minute of the game after an attempted shot by his teammate Zequinha . Opening goal and was substituted in this game in the 69th minute. Until the end of January 2015 he played more and more in the Primeira Liga, but never played the entire game. After the team ranked just ahead of the two relegation places in the table from the start, Paciência was released from his duties after 17 championship games, from which only four wins resulted.

After Bruno Ribeiro took over as coach, Lupeta came back to a brief assignment before he was no longer considered for most of the second half of the season. Only in April 2015 he came to two short appearances in the league lasting a few minutes. Under Ribeiro's leadership Vitória Setúbal managed to stay in the league, although the new coach brought in roughly the same results as the old coach; In 17 league games under Ribeiro, the club from Setúbal won only three games. In twelve league appearances that Lupeta completed in the Primeira Liga 2014/15 , he scored one goal and contributed one assist. There were also two appearances in the Taça da Liga of the 2014/15 season , in which Setúbal made it to the semifinals and defeated Benfica 3-0. His contract, which lasted for another year, was terminated by mutual agreement almost to the day exactly one year after it was signed. In the same year, Lupeta created the clothing brand Trankilo System in his home country Portugal, and with it appears as an all-rounder in addition to his career as a professional football player; Among other things, he designs the clothes himself and takes care of various other tasks. Lupeta invests most of the money he earns as a football player in the brand.

Via South Africa to Slovenia

Immediately afterwards he was signed by the Bidvest Wits with play operations in the South African Premier Division , the highest South African soccer division . The center forward made his league debut here on August 26, 2015 in a 2-0 home win over Maritzburg United , when coach Gavin Hunt sent him onto the field as a substitute for Kris Bright from the 71st minute . Until mid-January 2016, Lupeta often sat on the bench without being used or was sent to the field by Gavin Hunt. After that, he did not make it into the professional squad for weeks and, after a single assignment at the beginning of March 2016, did not return to the top soccer league in the country until mid-April 2016. In the final standings, he and Bidvest Wits FC were 14 points behind Mamelodi Sundowns FC in second place in the table and thus qualified for the 2017 CAF Champions League . In 30 league appearances that had been possible, the Portuguese played in twelve games, although he himself remained goalless. He also played in MTN 8 , in which he and his team were eliminated in the semifinals against eventual winners Ajax Cape Town , and in the Telkom Knockout , in which the team came to an abrupt end in the round of 16 against the Free State Stars . In the Nedbank Cup , the South African main cup competition, Bidvest Wits FC was eliminated from the Free State Stars on penalties in the quarter-finals.

Shortly after the end of the season, Lupeta was linked with league competitor Ajax Cape Town , whose head coach Roger De Sá is said to have shown interest in the 23-year-old. A month later, the Portuguese moved to the club in Parow , a suburb of Cape Town . Here he came to a brief assignment in the first game of the 2015/16 season , but could not gain a foothold here either. Subsequently, he came to short appearances in five league games until the beginning of December and had to sit on the bench most of the time without being used. He made another appearance in the round of 16 of the Nedbank Cup 2015/16, when he played for over half an hour in the game against SuperSport United . From the 13th round of the championship, Lupeta was no longer considered and no longer belonged to the squad. At the beginning of 2017, the club became aware of the departure of the attacking player.

During the winter break of 2016/17 he returned to Europe and at the end of February 2017 he joined the NK Celje from the Slovenian first class . With the Slovenians he immediately signed a contract with a term until the end of 2019 and came under the coach Igor Jovićević to regular use in attack and often over a longer game. After he made his competitive debut for the club from Celje on March 18, 2017 , he had ten league appearances and two goals by the end of the season. He finished the 2016/17 season with NK Celje in fifth place in the table, with the team just missing out on an international qualifying starting position. After years as a substitute player and a few professional appearances, he finally made his breakthrough in professional football at the age of 24 and began as a regular under the new coach Tomaž Petrovič in the 2017/18 season . Even under the new coach Dušan Kosič , who replaced Petrovič in September 2017, Lupeta was still used as a regular player. Of the previous (as of March 20, 2018) 23 championship games, he missed only one because he had to sit out a yellow card suspension. So far, the 1.86 m tall striker has scored one goal and prepared three goals for his teammates. He also played three games in the 2017/18 Slovenian Football Cup and is currently in the semi-finals with the team, in which the team will meet the capital city club Olimpija Ljubljana in a return match in April 2018 .

National team career

In the years 2010 to 2011 Lupeta completed at least nine internationals for the Portuguese U-18 selection , for which he scored four times.
