Julius Tinzmann

Heinz Julius Tinzmann (born April 4, 1907 in Rixdorf, today Berlin-Neukölln , † April 20, 1982 in Berlin-Spandau ) was a German writer , radio play writer and painter and a cameraman in pre-war Germany .

Life

Julius Tinzmann, son of the painter Max Tinzmann, grew up in simple circumstances. The youth movement and workers' education association gave him the experience of progressive art and contact with some of the artists. This is how he met László Moholy-Nagy , who invited him to study there after his appointment to the Bauhaus Weimar in 1923. In the one Bauhaus year from 1923 to 1924, his teachers in the preliminary artistic course were Wassily Kandinsky , Oskar Schlemmer and Lyonel Feininger, and above all Paul Klee .

From 1925 to 1928 he lived in Berlin, where he learned the craft of photography as a trainee in cultural film production . In addition, he worked as a freelance painter in the constructivist direction and exhibited variously. However, only a few pictures from this period have survived. Because he couldn't make a living from it, he did odd jobs and assignments. For example, he helped stage directors Erwin Piscator and Leopold Jessner .

In 1928 he enrolled at the Burg Giebichstein art and trade school in Halle (Saale) . As a master class student he studied with Charles Crodel and Erwin Hahs . A lifelong friendship developed with his studio partner Fritz Winter . The city ​​of Halle was the subject of a large number of Tinzmann's expressionist works; they were exhibited in Halle and Berlin.

Under the new political auspices in 1933 he left Halle and gave up painting. After returning to Berlin, he worked from 1933 to 1940 as a camera assistant for newsreels , advertising and the film industry. During this time he wrote a diary and also noted drafts of poems.

From 1940 to 1945 he served as a NCO in the Wehrmacht . In Italy he became a prisoner of war after the fighting ended and was taken to the Rimini-Miramare camp ("German headquarters"). There he led a German theater group that was allowed to perform in front of prisoners in Upper and Central Italy, with a first stage play being created. In June 1946 he was released and after a few days spent in Göttingen and the surrounding area, he was able to return to Berlin.

From 1946 to 1973 he worked as a freelance writer. Half a dozen novels could not find a publisher, only a number of his radio plays and television scripts were accepted, with many of the radio plays produced by the West Berlin broadcasters SFB and RIAS broadcast several times. With the novel trilogy Das Klavier , a family epic stretching over 50 years, he had a respectable success in 1968, which also reached audiences as a radio play and as a two-part television (directed by Fritz Umgelter , broadcast at Christmas 1972).

After a trip to Greece in 1973, he returned to painting. He mostly painted natural and industrial landscapes with opaque colors ( gouache or acrylic paint ) on cardboard.

Julius Tinzmann died on April 20, 1982 in Berlin.

reception

The colors are the most striking in Tinzmann's pictures. In 1984, the art historian Hans Wille described this in his catalog text as “colored penetration and illumination” of the depicted objects and landscapes, which received such an “unheard of luminosity”. His colleague Dorit Litt also emphasized the “clearly expressive” application of paint in her speech at the vernissage in Halle (Saale) in 2003 . "The often fraying edges give his city and landscape views something unreal," she added.

Tinzmann's early radio play The Birds was perceived as "pseudo-romantic" and therefore not convincing. Less than a year later he was recognized for his innovative execution of Im Schatten der Arena .

His television play A Beautiful Day was also classified as an “unconventional” or “new form” that tests “the new possibilities of the screen” . It is an “experiment”, depending on the reviewer, “brittle-poetic”, “humorous-poetic”, “cabaret-poetic”, “burlesque” or “subtle”. The name Ionesco came up again and again as a comparison . On the other hand, Hinter der Tür received bad reviews: what was offered was “poor” and “clichéd”, according to the Tagesspiegel . The General-Anzeiger Wuppertal wrote of a conventional narrative style and disappointing resolution. To the reviewer of the Stuttgarter Zeitung , the style appeared "penetrating" and the message morally sour. The “unsuccessful conclusion” was also criticized in the Tag , West Berlin edition. The television critic of the Stuttgarter Nachrichten summarized the piece as "mediocre hard work".

With regard to his novel, Tinzmann was described in the Spiegel as a "narrator of solid mediocrity".
