high pressure cleaner

The Karcher SE & Co. KG , in short Karcher , is a manufacturer of cleaning machines and systems headquartered in Winnenden , Baden-Wurttemberg . The family business employs 13,500 people worldwide (2019) with sales of EUR 2.578 billion and is considered the world market leader .

history

The company was founded in 1935 by Alfred Kärcher (1901–1959) in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt . In 1939, 120 employees moved to Winnenden, and the company has its headquarters there to this day.

One of the first economic successes was a salt bath furnace for energy-saving hardening and refining of light metals . The system had sold over 1,200 times by 1945, mainly in the aviation industry. Already in his father's company, Alfred Kärcher developed electric immersion heaters and crucible furnaces for heating fats, oils and tar for industrial use. Later he also developed gasoline-powered hot air guns, with which aircraft engines were warmed up before flying in order to facilitate starting in winter.

With the development of the first European hot water high pressure cleaner KW 350, later DS 350 in 1950, the foundation stone was laid for the later development of the manufacturer of cleaning technology. Since then, Kärcher has been significantly involved in the development of high-pressure cleaners and has 602 active patents (as of end of 2017). In addition to high-pressure cleaners, Kärcher mainly offered steam generators for industry and the booming construction industry from 1955 to the 1970s.

Alfred Kärcher died of a heart attack on September 17, 1959 at the age of 58. He left behind his wife Irene Kärcher and their two children, Johannes and Susanne. Irene Kärcher took over responsibility for the company from then on. The turnover of the medium-sized company increased by 70% with his new management in the first year. In 1962, the first sales company outside Germany was founded in France, in a small suburb of Paris. Further sales companies followed in Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Belgium. Today Kärcher is present with more than 110 companies in 67 countries.

1974 marked a change in the company's history. The company color changed from blue to yellow. On the other hand, due to excessive diversification, the focus was completely on the high-pressure cleaners, which were now made in the unmistakable Kärcher yellow. Kärcher has been carrying out cleaning projects on works of art and listed buildings around the world since the late 1970s, including the statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro every ten years since 1980 .

Due to the constant further development, the high-pressure cleaners sold better and better in the 1980s. In 1984, the HD 555 was the first high-pressure cleaner for private use.

On September 17, 2009, the 50th anniversary of the death of company founder Alfred Kärcher, the Kärcher Museum was opened in the former factory building . The focus of the presentation are documents on the life of Alfred and Irene Kärcher. In addition, different fields of cleaning technology are presented.

At the end of 2011, the company bought the adjoining site of the former Pfleiderer brickworks. As a result of the expansion, the operating area has almost doubled. In September 2012, construction work for the extension began with the demolition of the brickyard. In September 2014, a new office building for 700 employees and an event building for up to 800 people went into operation. The new customer center has been in operation since 2016. The complex is connected to the previous location by a bridge over intermediate train tracks.

In 2016, sales reached 2.33 billion euros (previous year: 2.22 billion euros). In 2017, Kärcher reached the sales mark of 2.5 billion euros.

Products

The cleaning equipment manufacturer offers products for both private and commercial use. Home & Garden products for private users have the yellow color that is typical for Kärcher, while professional products for trade are anthracite.

The company gained fame primarily for its high-pressure cleaners. The product range also includes numerous cleaning solutions for various areas of application: hard floor cleaners, steam vacuums , window vacuums , scrubber- driers , sweepers , suction technology of various types, pumps and irrigation systems , water purification systems and washing systems .
