history

Kösnitz ( Cosence ) was first mentioned in a sales document from Bishop Ekkehard von Merseburg from around 1217/18 . The place name is probably due to the Slavic personal name koz "goat". As an original imperial estate , Kösnitz belonged to the Dornburg rule in the Middle Ages and was administered from the 14th century to 1879 by the Wettin office of Dornburg . The oldest tradition from court owners comes from the period 1421–1425. Up until the Thirty Years' War, many residents were involved in viticulture in Nerkewitzer Grund.
In 1715 a fire broke out on a wedding night and devastated the entire village. In 1858 another 11 houses burned down. In 1727, the community acquired hospitality from the state government. The Gasthof Kösnitz has been family-owned since 1904.
Kösnitz has been a branch of the Utenbach parish since ancient times and is now supplied by the Schöten parish . The former village school was founded in the first half of the 16th century. The village was and is characterized by agriculture. Now commercial enterprises have also settled.
Worth seeing
The church of Kösnitz is a Baroque building in the 18th century. However, it goes back to an older predecessor.
To the south of the village near the desert of Oberkösnitz and at the former intersection of three long-distance traffic routes, there is a stone cross , the so-called Swedish cross . It originally carried a hewn ax and the Mainz wheel . Nothing is known about its origin.
