history
The canton of Thiberville was founded on February 21, 1790 and at that time comprised the 20 communities of Barville , Bazoques , Boissy-Lamberville , Bournainville , La Chapelle-Hareng , Drucourt , Duranville , Le Favril , Folleville , Fontaine-la-Louvet , Fontenelle, Giverville , Heudreville , Piencourt , Les Places , Le Planquay, Saint-Aubin-de-Scellon , Saint-Léger-de-Glatigny, Le Theil-Nolent and Thiberville. The municipalities of Saint-Germain-la-Campagne, Saint-Mards-de-Fresne , Faverolles-les-Mares and Saint-Vincent-du-Boulay were incorporated into the canton in the year IX of the Revolution (1800/1801). Fontenelle and Saint-Léger-de-Glatigny were incorporated into Fontaine-la-Louvet in 1845. Faverolles-les-Mares was incorporated into Bournainville in 1964.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the communities were connected to the power grid. In order to make better use of the new technology, the member communities of the cantons formed so-called Syndicats (compare: Syndicat intercommunal à vocation multiple ). Most of these associations are no longer divided up according to cantons. In 1997 the member municipalities of the canton of Thiberville founded the communal association Communauté de communes du Canton de Thiberville .
From 1803 to 1940 the canton elected one or two MPs for the council of the Bernay arrondissement. From 1803 to the present day, with interruptions in 1868 and 1871, the canton provided a member of the General Council of the Eure département in Évreux .

Population development
The population figures from 1398 to 1509 can only be derived from the tax revenue (Fouage normand) of the parishes . The tax was collected every three years by household. Beggars, nobles and priests were excluded. On average, five people belonged to a household. However, the records are incomplete, so that the total population of the canton per year cannot be calculated.

The first population statistics were carried out in the year VIII of the Revolution (1799/1800). At that time the canton had a total of 13,515 inhabitants, in 1836 even 15,453 inhabitants. In the second half of the 19th century, however, the population fell. In 1866 there were 12,824 inhabitants, in 1906 only 6,095.
