The Roman Catholic chapel Maria am Wegen is located in the Gillrath district in the city of Geilenkirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

The chapel is located near the Gillrath district on Birgdener Straße between Birgden and Gillrath at a crossroads . It stands on a raised hill, which is planted with trees.

history

In 2001, the haulier Heinz Ripphausen from Gillrath had the Maria am weg chapel built. In 1946, near the current location, the uncle of the builder Martin Franzen was killed by exploding mine ammunition . This tragic event triggered the construction of this chapel, which was inaugurated in the year it was built. The chapel has been severely damaged several times by metal theft and vandalism .

architecture

The chapel is a small brick building with a round arch under a steep gable roof . The wooden roof is covered with a copper cover. A roof turret with a compass rose, also studded with copper, is incorporated into the roof. A small bell is housed in it. A round window in each of the gable walls allows light to enter. A wrought iron protective grille is installed in the interior . The Madonna of the St. Elisabeth Hospital stands on a stone pedestal . A prayer bench with a prayer book invites you to pray and pause.
