location

The hall church was in the new building area in Bauchem Im Gang 46 .

history

In 1970 the church council decided to build a parish center as a branch church of St. Josef. The community center also served as the garrison church of the Selfkant barracks .

In 2013 Franziskusheim gGmbH presented plans to demolish the church in need of renovation in order to build a meeting place with senior-friendly apartments with day care facilities on the 6000 square meter site.

In the spring of 2014 an incendiary device was set inside the church, so that the church could no longer be used.

Then, in August 2014, the Geilenkirchen Environment and Building Committee decided to demolish the church, which has been under temporary preservation order since spring 2014 . In contrast, the Office for Monument Preservation argued that a number of architectural, liturgical, urban and artistic reasons speak in favor of preserving the church. The last mass took place in front of the church on August 16, 2015.

Despite the concerns about the preservation of monuments, permits were issued in 2016 to demolish the church. The plan is to demolish the church in spring 2018.

From March to April of 2018 St. Josef was demolished.

architecture

The concrete hall church was built in 1974 according to the plans of the architect Matthias Kleuters from Aachen . Special architectural features of the church were the rounded shell walls and the use of new materials, such as high-gloss bricks.

The church consisted of a large church room for Sunday and festival services and a small church room for weekday services. The modern liturgical room concept envisaged the alignment of both rooms on a common round altar .

In addition, a community hall , group rooms and associated ancillary rooms supplemented the facility, which were also demolished in 2018.
